Against my instincts, I recently started letting Owen watch "Thomas & Friends" once in a while, since he has the stereotypical boy's love of trains. But the more I see of it, the less I like it! I hate how there's only one female character (who you never see), I hate how the trains are always misbehaving or rude or teasing one another without repercussions, and I especially hate how there is ALWAYS a disaster (a big crash, a rock slide, derailing, etc. etc.). Compared to the other shows out there that he sometimes watches (Calliou, Sesame Street, Curious George, Dinosaur Train), I think it borders on violent.
Am I being overly sensitive? Does anyone know of another train show he could watch instead? If I'm going to cut this off, I have to do it now.
Re: Thomas & Friends
Marcus loves it, so we do let him watch it once in a while. I do get irked that there's only the one girl train, and she's like this big know-it-all beeyotch. We laugh that the whole emphasis on 'being useful' sometimes borders on communist propaganda. The misbehaving/rude doesn't bother me, because they usually seem to learn a lesson from their bad behaviors, those naughty little trains. The disasters don't bother me either; I never noticed it being violent. It doesn't seem like a show that Marcus is going to learn a whole lot from, but he just enjoys it because he's into the 'choo choo's'. I'll have to pay more attention next time I watch, but I guess I wouldn't worry too much about it.
What is it about trains that's so damn enthralling??
Eli loves Thomas too. Well, I should say he LOVES the toy trains he has and a "Thomas ABCs" book he has. As for the show, he loves the song at the beginning and a "Songs from the Station" sing along DVD we have. He never sits and watches the show (any entire show for that matter, not just Thomas), but I share a lot of your annoyances with it. Although he does love the disaster scenes and yells "Oh no! A big crash!" excitedly.
There is a train show called "Chuggington" on Playhouse Disney that seems cute, but Eli isn't interested in it.
They don't grow out of it either. Our living room has no furniture; we put what we have in the den, and are waiting to buy nicer for the LR.
When we went home for Christmas DH brought his childhood train set back with him.
Guess what is currently set up everywhere in our completely empty living room, what has kept DH busy for the past week, what has made him come home on time all week.
And he is so excited. I don't get it.
This is hilarious!
It's funny, Meg, I've never seen them learn a lesson. They get chided for screwing up, then magically they fix it, but they don't seem to learn anything from it and the next episode they are all the same characters again. I don't know, I guess it's not that bad -- but I really don't see any value in it. Nuts, I never should've caved in the first place.
Sarah, I'll check out that Disney show -- thanks!
I can't stand Thomas for many reasons...I think it is such a boring show, it looks like something I video taped down in my basement.
Peter loves Chugginton on Disney! We DVR the 6am show, so that we can watch it later.
Thank goodness Helen never really got into watching Thomas. She used to watch it sometimes on Sprout in the morning but I don't usually turn on that channel anymore because I'm always afraid I'll find the Wiggles on. <shudder>
Helen's current favorites are Pinky Dinky Doo, Jack's Big Music Show, and Yo Gabba Gabba.

Same here! The sing along dvd we have has the words, with little cute puffs of steam that bounce along, and it is so funny to realize what they are actually saying!
