Disgusting Yes on Prop 8 letter
"Make a donation of a like amount to ProtectMarriage.com which will
help us correct this error," reads the letter. "Were you to elect not
to donate comparably, it would be a clear indication that you are in
opposition to traditional marriage. ... The names of any companies and
organizations that choose not to donate in like manner to
ProtectMarriage.com but have given to Equality California will be
published."
Article here.
Re: Disgusting Yes on Prop 8 letter
There's more. This one is to a company who already donated to No.
"We respectfully request that Abbott & Associates withdraw its support of Equality California. Make a donation of a like amount to ProtectMarriage.com which will help us correct this error ... The names of any companies and organizations that choose not to donate in like manner to ProtectMarriage.com but have given to Equality California will be published. ... We will contact you shortly to discuss your contribution."
Ugh.
So the Yes campaign chairman first denies the attack, then admits to the letter, then says it's only intended for large public corporations. But those donations are public knowledge (as are the Yes donations listed by Californians against Hate).
I think it's important to point out that it's not the listing of names that's the issue (esp since most of them are public), it's the extortion attempt.
[Prentice] said the ProtectMarriage.com campaign was asking businesses backing the other side "to reconsider taking a position on a moral issue in California."
"I think the IDing of, or outing of, any company is very secondary to the question of why especially a public corporation would choose to take a side knowing it would splinter it's own clientele," he said.
It's not a moral issue, it's a legal issue. The gov't does not comment on moral issues. They just don't get that this has nothing to do with their religious beliefs, and I'm struggling to accept that they never will. The whole thing is astounding. I can't tell you the amount of respect I've lost for the Mormon church; if they're trying to do this to gain favor in the evangelical community, they'd better be careful - I think they may have to deal with a backlash from the rest of us.
Holy S. I hate these people.
It appalls me that not only are they willing to enact laws based on hate, but that they'll do anything it takes to do so.
It doesn't seem very Christian to me...
Klassy.
b/c if your not with them, you're against them. It's inconsevible that a company isn't supporting either side.
Yes please do this so I know which companies and organizations to go out of my way to patronize.
thats horrible - and ditto TTT - lol!
