On Thursday morning I found out that at some point in the next 12 months, my company is moving all of the workers at my site to the HQ which is in the Western part of NJ. This would mean over an hour commute for me from where we live now. DH and I spoke about the fact that this is unsustainable long term, so it looks like in the next year or so we're going to be moving from the town we love to somewhere closer to my new office.
I've lived here over 9 years and DH has been here over 10 years, and we have a great community of friends who live within blocks of us and a solid social network in town, so it's going to be tough to leave. We knew we were going to have to move at some point soon since it's not a great place to raise kids, this just accelerated the timeline a bit. We're both a little sad though.
We've also been talking about what to do about DH's Yankees season tickets. He's had them since 1996 but the prices shot up a ton when they opened the new stadium in 2009, and his seats aren't nearly as good as they were in the old stadium so he has a difficult time re-selling his tickets. DH's income is like a third of what it used to be before he got laid off, so we just can't afford them. He was trying to find people to go in with him on the tickets but this weekend he exhausted his last possibility. So it looks like he is giving them up ![]()
I feel like the poor guy is losing a lot in a short time, but I know that's just the reality of this sucky economy. I'm personally excited about moving somewhere new (maybe our "forever" town) and getting out of our urban environment to a place with closet space, a backyard, easy parking, etc., but he's never lived in a suburb so it's going to be tough on him.
Re: My Poor DH :(
That is A LOT to deal with in such a short time. Hopefully he's a trooper about it and adjusts quickly!
Also, my deepest to him for giving up the Yankee's tickets. It had to have been hard!

Oy that is a lot at once. Hopefully you'll fall in love with your new forever(?) town and you'll have a space for friends to visit and BBQ in the summers or something fun like that. My DH had to move from Brooklyn/Queens where he lived the city life for 36 years to the suburbs outside of NYC and he seems to be adjusting well. He's looking forward to the yard in the summer!
As for the Yankee tickets thats really hard...maybe in a few years he'll be able to get back in there but I can imagine that its hard to face.
Wow, that's quite a few changes! I hope you find a fabulous house in an awesome neighborhood! Changes can be hard, but they can also be good!!! I would LOVE a backyard!
That's a bummer about the Yankees tickets though
Maybe you can buy a few AWESOME tickets a year though, instead of less awesome season tickets?

That is a lot! I would be so sad about the tickets! Like Marg said, though, maybe you can get a couple of great seats at a fews game in order to help make up for it. As for the suburbs move, I know that can be hard because my mom still misses living in a city (and she has been out of one for 32 years!). I love the small town life. LOVE it! I lived in a city-ish during college, and couldn't wait to get back! It is so nice have a community that you know will be safe to raise kids in and to have space and a back yard. But, sounds like you won't have to move too far to miss out on some of the great events and friends!
Good luck with all! : )
Aww, Lori, that is a lot to take in, but hopefully your DH will be able to ease into the actual change. Maybe you can find a suburb that's got a nice small downtown you can walk to, there seem to bunches of them in Jersey. I feel DH's pain about the Yankees tickets, those would be hard to give up (geographically messed up as I am sports-wise, I'm actually a Yankees fan -- born in the Bronx -- I suppose I'm just a glutton for punishment, lol).
Hang in there... I'm sure there's a silver lining to this cloud!
