diaper pail?

This question's probably been asked before, but I can't recall.  We're getting into full-on stink mode when it comes to diapers with solid foods on Gabrielle's menu.  So far we've just been using a flip open trash can with a wet bag for her cloth diapers and then a smaller trash can for trash and wipes.  Is there anything more oder-containing that we could use for the cloth diapers?  Would a diaper pail really be any better than the trash can?  Maybe we'll just have to move them down to the basement, but it's kind of a pain to have to bring them down everytime we change a dirty one.

 What do you do?

Re: diaper pail?

  • I'm guessing that it's the small trash can that's stinking the most, unless you're not getting most of the poop off the diapers before throwing them in the pail.  (Of course, our pail is dry, not wet, so maybe that makes a difference.)  The only smell problems we've had with our diaper pail (which is also a flip open trash can) is ammonia, which can sometimes be overwhelming when the can gets opened.  I've put a box of baking soda in the bottom of the pail, and that seems to have helped.

  • Our friend recommended a metal one from the hardware store.  Metal doesn't absorb odors like plastic she said.  That's what we have.  But we're not on solids yet so I'm not sure how it will do when the really stinky diapers come.

  • We have a little problem with ammonia sometimes if they don't drink a lot, but the other smelly problem was when we used disposable wipes and put them into another trashcan and that trashcan was smelly...

  • Looks like you guys are right - the other little trash can with the disposable wipes seems to be the problem, since when I got home yesterday and that had been taken out, the smell was not an issue at all and the cloth can was still full.
