Dumb questions...vacuum related...

Ok ladies I have a really dumb question.  I am in the market for a new vaccum (one that can withstand two shelties and their need to shed a LOT).  I've heard a lot about Dyson and that they're great but where would you buy one?

I am having a hard time really thinking of a good vacuum store...I mean I know I could go to target or walmart, or costco, but are they good?  Its kind of like, I wouldn't go to Walmart for a Tv but I would go to Best Buy or Ultimate Electronics.  So is there a place you'd recommend, or is anywhere good?

What would you recommend...I need a vacuum but I also want something I can use on the stairs since I have a lot of them now...

Re: Dumb questions...vacuum related...

  • We have the yellow Dyson http://www.amazon.com/Dyson-All-Floors-Cyclone-Upright-Cleaner/dp/B000079R7E

I don't know if they make this one anymore since they seem to only sell the ball vacuums now.  We LOVE it, however.  Even if our floors (wood) and rugs look clean, we run the Dyson over them and it picks up everything!  The wand is extra long, which is nice since I don't need to get out a step ladder when cleaning the corners/ceiling.

I did see a yellow Dyson (didn't pay attention if it was the ball version or not) at the StLP Costco yesterday for around $230 - a great price!!  I think that a vacuum is a vacuum, where you get it doesn't really matter.  We had a question about ours and we went to Al's Vacuum in Bloomington and they were able to help us, but their prices on new vacuums seemed higher than Target etc.

  • Definitely doesn't matter where you buy it.  Research which model you would like - then go buy it wherever it's cheapest (except Walmart because they are the devil.)

  • Where totally doesn't matter. Find it cheapest and buy it there. (I'd even shop at walmart, because the devil has low prices) If it's the brand/model you want, get it. I know Target has a dyson on clearance for about 300. Not sure which one though, because we bought a cheaper vacuum.
  • We actually bought ours with a 30% at Kohls. We have the purple animal version of the Dyson and love it. Ours came with this great attachment for stairs or furniture that attaches to the wand or hose, and it is a small brush that moves. We love it for the stairs.
  • First, a disclaimer: I have never owned a Dyson.

I know people love them, but in a recent edition of consumer reports, the highest-rated Dyson was something like #21 on their list.

We recently bought this Hoover and it's awesome. It was rated #3 (or maybe #4) on the Consumer Reports list of best upright vacuums, and it's $89.99. I couldn't believe how much better our carpets looked after getting this vacuum. It does great with dog hair ... and very long blonde person hair too :-)

If you really want the Dyson, go ahead. I'm not trying to talk you out of it, I just wanted to give you another option that costs less to check out ...

  • Not really 100% sold on the dyson due solely in part to the cost...I find it really hard to believe that they can be sooo awesome that they are worth the $300-$500 price tag.

I really want something that will not crap out on me so quick.  I have a bissell bagless right now and it works, but the cansister always leaks dust all over the place when I empty it, and I think that is so gross...plus I'd like to combine it with something that does stairs better.  It really doesn't hold much either in the canister so I have to empty about 3 times when I vacuum because of all the dog hair and the shear volume of area I have to vacuum now.

So I guess please recommend ANY vacuum that will pick up dog hair.  We have the Bissell Little green machine and that is AWESOME, and thought our vacuum would be the same and it isn't..

Same here.  I wanted the DC25 (purple/animal/ball)- which retails for roughly $530+.  It went on sale at Kohls for about $499, and then they had a 20% off coupon+$60 Kohls cash back (which I used to buy Christmas presents).  After all that I paid under $300.  It pays to be patient and do your research!  I love the vacuum.  I have 2 cats and I'm amazed at how much fur this thing yanks out of my carpets.  It's also super convenient to vacuum the couch (or stairs if we had them) and anything else needing an attachment.

If you do research you'll learn that Dysons don't usually score very well. We have two pugs and most people don't know it but pugs are HUGE shedders. We researched A LOT when getting a new vacuum and not one place/reputable source recommended a Dyson. Not trying to tell you not to buy one - but I don't understand why people love them. I have had one as well as parents and sure they are vacuums, they suck stuff up but I was never impressed with them. Our new vacuum (Kenmore) puts both Dysons I've used to shame. Coincidentally it has also been #1 and #2 on Consumer Report's list for the past few years (it would go back and forth with another vacuum).

Of course do what you want, but there's my info for you! Smile
  • We have the purple Dyson and bought it with a coupon at Bed Bath and Beyond. We've had it for probably 6+ years and love it!

  • We have the animal Dyson and I absolutely love it!!!  We've had it over two years now and it still works great.  Before getting it we would constantly go through vacuums and almost every time we would have to take the vacuum apart because of clogged hair (we have 2 shedding dogs).  We do clean our Dyson, but it's definitely not an every time event.  When we got ours we used a 20% off coupon at BB&B.

  • I was at Sears looking for a Kenmore because they get high ratings and my SIL really likes hers, but I ended up spotting an Electrolux for 50% and picked that up.

The Electrolux is nice but the reviews aren't the best - one of the common problems is a roller bar issue that I ended up experiencing.  I mention it because I called Electrolux and it was covered under warranty - I brought it to a vacuum repair shop and it was fixed for free.  I didn't need my receipt and no one asked where I bought it.  I would think Dyson would have a similar warranty.
