  The only surprising statistic was the number of weapons confiscated at airports.  I can't believe so many people would try to get them through security.

  It isn't that they try, it's that people who don't fly a lot forget they have them. They confiscated my spoon/fork/knife combo from DH last month (on the return flight though) simply because we forgot to unpack it.

  This happened to my ex when we went to Vegas.  The last time he had used his backpack was when we stayed at his parent's house for Christmas.  He had forgotten to take out the Leatherman his dad had given him.  It was in the very bottom of his bag & he probably didn't even see it while packing.

  I know someone who works at TSA and he said that it happens a lot more than you would think where it's an honest mistake that someone forgot something was in a bag that they packed for a trip.  They have to follow protocol regardless to be safe.
