I will admit I know very little about politics and the US legal system, but clearly the shooter deserves some kind of sentance for his actions. The lady who is defending him has defended other infamous "bad guys"...so I don't get it (and will admit may be completely oblvious) but what is she defending him from when he so clearly did something wrong? A shorter sentence? Less penalties?
Re: AZ Shooting
I imagine she is going to try to prove that he is mentally incompetent to stand trial and have him institutionalized rather than potentially given the death penalty. It really won't be a trial about whether he is guilty or innocent but about whether he had control of his actions and how heavy his sentence should be. All people are guaranteed the right to a fair trail and council, so even if you have concrete evidence against someone, there is still someone who has to defend them.
I should add that I in no way am defending the guys actions, just speculating on what the lawyer will do in defense of the man.
Thanks. That makes sense, I was thinking it had something to do with proving his mental stability (or lack thereof) and obviously, yes, I agree that everyone deserves a fair trial.
Wow, I can't imagine being an attorney for him, or similar criminals, I guess you'd really just have to put the deeds/actions that got the person in court out of your mind and really focus on the person themself?

So I woke up already upset, then saw this on the news and basically had death on the mind all day.
If I remember correctly, she defended the Unibomber, the Oklahoma City Bomber and Susan Smith (I think her name is, the mom that drowned her children in her car).
In Arizona, if you are convincted by reason of insanity, you are put in a mental hospital, and if you are ever deemed sane then you go to prison, so no matter what this guy will never be free.
In some states, in the same situation where you are deemed sane, you are released to society. Scary stuff!
