Black Swan

Has anyone seen this? We saw it on Saturday - I liked it, though I guess "like" is the wrong word. It was really well done - an intense, compelling storyline, with really good acting all around- but I don't think I can watch it again anytime soon.  Much like the rest of Darren Aronofsky's movies, this will probably be a one-timer for me.

Though it's still haunting me.  In fact, I have a hangnail staring at me right now, and I'm still too disturbed by the film to do anything about it. : )

  • I haven't seen it, but I REALLY want to.  I've really only heard good things.

  • I work at an independent movie theatre, and it's doing VERY well! People love it, but say that it's creepy and intense.

I have to stare at the damn poster all day, which is freaky on its own - so I don't know if I want to see it.

  • My oldest daughter went to see it, and it has now replaced "Sweeney Todd" as her favorite movie, so as far as I'm concerned, that can only mean good things!  I'm hoping to find some time to go see it this week.  I haven't heard anyone yet say that they didn't like it.
  • I saw it and really liked it - a bit creepy at times, a bit intense, but you connect to the characters very quickly.  You feel so badly for Natalie Portman's character at times....  DH's comment afterwards was asking if a friend of ours recognizes the parallels to her own life (similar mother, some of the obsessive characteristics, etc.)... yikes!

I'm not sure I'd want to see it again, but I didn't feel ripped off for seeing it at full-evening-ticket prices.

I didn't feel ripped off either, which is rare, heh.  We usually get discount tickets through my work, but we ended up seeing it at a different theater and paid full price.

I will say, if anyone is thinking of seeing it and has any sort of adverse reaction to the hand-held "shaky-cam" cameras, take some ibuprofen or something before you go. I'm usually fine, but I got a headache from the camera work about an hour in.  It settled down after that, but I know some people react badly to it.

    What a cool job!

  • I haven't seen the movie but really want to.  We're broke though, so I'll most likely have to wait until it comes out on DVD.  I've heard it's intense and creepy but not something people could watch a bunch of times.  So pretty much what all of you have said.

  • I didn't like it. I really thought I would, but I didn't. I found it to be pretentious. That's really the most I can say. I think the story was fine (although he REALLY hits you over the head with the allegory), the cinematography was good (although the hand held stuff was a bit too gritty for this film), and the acting was great. I thought Mila Kunis was wonderful and she'll probably get a best supporting actress nomination. I respected Natalie Portman in the role, because not only was it physically demanding, but emotionally draining - she was in every single scene, since the point of the movie is that it's told from her PoV.

I don't know. It seemed to have the elements of a good movie. Like Aronofsky went through and said, "good acting? check! good dialogue? check! good plot development? check! I think we have a winner!" But it didn't really come together for me.

I really preferred the Wrestler. I thought Mickey Rourke was humble and the movie was gritty and real. Not trying to be anything it really wasn't. Aronofsky couldn't strike a balance between that realism and his desire to do a polished studio film this time, or something.

Anyway, I liked True Grit a LOT. I couldn't bring myself to see the Social Network - it held no interest for me - but I hear it's currently favored to win Best Picture. Who knows.

I've heard good things about it, but Coen Bros. movies make me stabby.
