we're looking at houses

...in Kenya. We were talking about renting, then we were talking about building. Finally, we decided that buying would be the best thing, if we can find a good place - most big places are expensive and most reasonably priced places are tiny - 2 bedrooms and 1 all-purpose room. But, DH found a property yesterday that could be just about perfect. The main house has 4 bedrooms, plus a master suite, at least three bathrooms (they don't say, but I see 3 in the pics - and they're western style, which excites me), large living areas, and an indoor kitchen. It's on 8 acres, with a "servants' quarters" separate building, wall around the property with a secure gate, and a small guard house. All of that is only $75K (we would hire a security guard service for about $200/month). Seriously. We would have space for several kids to live in the main house and staff in the servants' quarters, plus we'd have land to build another building in the future when we need more living spaces. I don't expect to buy this house (the property doesn't show up in their listings, so it may already be sold), but it is exciting to see that something perfect may already be in existence.

Yeah, that pink is something else.

Right now, I think we'll move in a year-ish. We started looking at houses so we would have an idea of what kind of number to put in the financial needs part of our presentation. Then, we got carried away and started dreaming. I can already see myself repainting those pink walls...

  • Once all is said and done will $200 for security be a tight squeeze? or will you be making us dollars because the church is based in the us?

You can ignore this question if it's too personal.

  • All of our expenses will be covered by our church, or whoever ends up sponsoring the orphanage. Our presentation will include one-time expenses and monthly expenses, and our support will be based on that. So as long as our support comes in, it won't be a problem. All money will come through the orphanage, and the orphanage will pay us sort of an allowance each month. If we're living on site and eating with the kids, we won't have significant expenses of our own.
