philly nestie traveling to boston - need restaurant recommendations please!

Hi, me, DH and another couple are heading to Boston for a long weekend in February. We would love a good seafood place as well as a good italian or steak house. We have good hotel connections and will be staying at either the liberty or the omni. Please reply with any recommendations. TIA!!

Re: philly nestie traveling to boston - need restaurant recommendations please!

  • Hi!

If you stay at the Omni Parker House then Ruth's Chris is just across the street. (Also a couple of streets away on Bromfield St is Silvertone - great comfort food and martinis. It is one of my favorite places. Their mac and cheese is fab!)

The Liberty Hotel is great! Very much a 'scene'. The North End is close by and there are tons of Italian places, most of them good. My faves are El Panino and Carmen.

    HTH!

  • Il Panino is by far my favorite Italian place (and very authentic food)

For steak, there is a Capital Grille on Newbury Street - their food is fantastic

  • Anything in the North End will be great for Italian.

    For steak, try Mooo.

This doesn't fall into any of your specific categories, but No. 9 Park is a fantastic restaurant.  If you have a car and want to venture into some of the 'burbs, I highly recommend Salts in Cambridge and Blue Ginger in Wellesley,  Have a great trip!

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • for seafood, you really can't go wrong with the summer shack.  it's really, really good.  Neptune oyster is also really good.

for steak, definitely agree with capital grill... but i would also add ko prime and the oak room.

finally, as pp's have mentioned anything in the north end is fantastic.  my personal favorite is Prezza

also, in boston, we have a program called phantom gourmet that goes around and secretly rates different restaurants.  I find their website to be a good resource when looking for something new.  http://phantomgourmet.com/showpage.aspx?content=searchrestaurants

    ...hello out there!

  • For steak I also recommend Ruth Chris or Mooo (both are right near the Omni). Ruth Chris is probably more romantic and has a larger wine list than Mooo, but DH and I have been to both in the past year (as well as Capital Grille and Grill 23 past few years) and I think our favorite has been Ruth Chris. I am a big filet mignon fan though, so thats what I had ordered at all 4 places, as well as some surf (excellent at all 4 places as well) and sides. Can't recall that DH ordered though. You should have a great meal at any of those places.

  • Thank you all so much for the suggestions! We have a Capital Grill and Ruth Chris's (which i am taking DH to this weekend!) so we will probably try some of the other recommendations.  I will report back with my reviews accordingly. :)

  • If you're really looking to splurge, Mooo has a wagyu beef sirloin on their menu....

Oh, and I thought of a couple of sushi places in case they fall into your seafood interests too--O Ya is very splurgey, Oishii a little less so (I have yet to go to the latter but I have a Groupon to use there and it is generally highly recommended).

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • First, I love the fact that you want to try more local places! Yay!!!! It's so easy to just go to Ruths or Capitol Grille because of their name, but there are other wonderful, local places.

Here are a few of my favorite places in Boston to eat, in no order... just how I think of them. : )

I'm surprised no one mentioned Abe and Louies for steak. I have not eaten there, but know many people who have, and it seems to be a favorite place to go for steak in Boston.

Oak Room: Fairmont Copley, Back Bay. Old School, jacket required, rather pricey, elegant steak house.

Stella: in the South End neighborhood. Modern Italian food. Good homemade pasta dishes, fun neighborhood feel. Well priced, good cocktails and the fried artichokes are yummy!!!

Gallows: also in the South End, Gastropub. The menu is a bit odd, but the food is great!!! And a fun atmosphere as well.

Sel De La Tere: two locations in Boston. The best burger in Boston, plus a wonderful full menu of excellent entrees. French inspired, but some great seafood options. This is also a good lunch option.

Giacomo's: South End/North End. Giacomo's is my favorite "North End" restaurant. I know many people say you can't go wrong in the North End, but SO and I have had several disappointing North End meals. Giacomo's in the South End is perfect! Well priced, great classic Italian food. They have a restaurant in the North End, but it's really tough to get in. Call ahead, and you can make reservations. Just be aware, they only take cash.

Petit Robert: South End/Downtown Crossing. (I have only eaten at the one in the South End) Classic French and really wonderful! The giant profiterole is heaven!

Neptune Oyster: North End.  Supposed to be AMAZING! SO hates seafood, so I have not had a chance to go, but friends of my rave about this place. It has some outstanding Yelp reviews.

What I also remind friends who are visiting Boston is that all good restaurants in Boston have access to fresh seafood. Don't limit yourself to a "Seafood restaurant." And please note the lack of recommendations for Legal Seafood... they are everywhere in Boston, but they are a giant tourist trap!

Note: Mike's Pastry and Modern Pastry are the two big names in the North End. Every tourist walks around with those little, hand tied boxes from Mikes. But, IMHO the best Italian pastry shop in the North End is Maria's. When you order a canoli, they take the shell in the back and fill it for you fresh. Everything I have had there has been fantastic!

     If you have a chance:

Mike's Diner: South End. Great breakfasts

Flour Bakery: South End/Fort Point Channel. Sticky Buns, sandwiches, cookies yummy goodness.

JP Licks: Newbury Street. Ice cream

Hotel Chocolate: Newbury Street. Stop by this British chocolatier, they always have free samples. : )

    Have fun!!! Enjoy Boston

  • One thing I will say about Legal Seafood, though, is that they do have excellent clam chowder.  The rest of their food is fine but nothing special.  I would gladly go there just for some chowder and their great bread though.
