How are the roads?

Anyone been out on the roads?  How are they where you are?  School was cancelled today...surprise surprise.  I don't want anyone out risking their lives, but I don't want to make it up either.  It will most likely be taken from spring break and I had plans to visit my sister then.

Another teacher that lives in Durham about 10 min from our school said the roads are a solid sheet of ice, and she doesn't plan to go in at all.  We are suppose to go in our snow days (thanks to NC not being a union state), but haven't gotten word if our school is open yet.

Re: How are the roads?

  • I've only seen my driveway and the street we live on, but everything looks like a solid sheet of ice.  I'm curious how bad the highways are, but I probably won't be venturing out at all today.
  • The roads are definitely slick in spots, but seem to be passable. I think you have a Corolla, right? That's what I have too and I did OK about 2 hours ago, I imagine it's probably a little better now as more cars have been out.  I live in N. Raleigh and traveled roads like Millbrook, Creedmoor, and Glenwood. Tire tread areas were mostly clear, but there was ice in between lanes and at intersections.  In your situation, I'd probably suck it up and drive slowly and cautiously. Our parking lot was a sheet of ice, though, so choose your parking location carefully.
  • I went on 440 and it mostly OK. It seemed like the leftmost 3 lanes were just wet, but the rightmost lane was icy.
  • Can someone explain the whole park at the end of your driveway at the anticipation of a snow even thing?? Am I the only one who thinks this is so bizarre? Unless you have a steep driveway, in which case you get a pass, I don't get it. If you can't get out of your driveway due to ice/snow, you probably aren't going anywhere anyway!
  • I do have a Corolla....if someone would give us the go ahead that the building was open I would go.  However, I'm not wasting gas to go to Durham to find out it isn't open.

  • Can't blame you. I'd be pissed to waste the gas and go through the stress of driving to arrive to a dark building.

I don't quite get this either.  We have a steep driveway and should have parked at the bottom last night, but oh well!  We aren't planning on going any where today anyways!

We do have a steep driveway, but even if we didn't, we'd still do it. My work truck is currently parked in the back yard (corner lot) and our other car is at the top of the driveway. If we did have to get out, even w/ a flat driveway, it's less to travel on the slick driveway and into the more passable roads. Our neighborhood hasn't seen a plow or salt/sand/brine truck, but we could get out if we had to... I've been watching cars all morning driving ok, even though it's a sheet of ice. Most driveways tend to melt much slower than the roads too, depending on material and the amount of sun. More tire tracks in the driveway=more packed down, slower to melt. A lot of people here don't have snow shovels either, so they park where they know they'll be able to get in/out in hopes the rest will melt faster w/o the packed down snow.

  • That is a good point on the snow being packed down and thus melting slower, I guess I hadn't really thought about it. My driveway is nearly all shaded and we don't own a shovel so it does take forever to melt, I just don't really care if it takes a few days since it is mostly flat.  Maybe it's b/c we park in our garage so I can just wait a couple days before having to actually walk on our driveway?  Our neighborhood never sees a plow either and I have to go uphill out of a culdesac that gets much slicker (packed down) than my driveway so parking at the end of the driveway wouldn't do much for me aside from add extra time to clean it off.  Even if I weren't on a cul-de-sac, and lived on a more traveled road in my neighborhood, I wouldn't want to park my car at the end of the driveway b/c the roads are usually slick and I wouldn't want someone sliding off the road and hitting my car. Well, I'm glad to have somewhat of an explaination for something I've been completely perplexced by.
  • I thought the roads were mostly fine....as far as snowy, icy roads go.  Don't go faster than you have to, don't slam on your breaks, and don't freak the heck out when you start to slide--just steer where you want to go.

I parked in the road at the top of our cul de sac.  My driveway is a steep downhill to where we park--DH's car had trouble getting up the slope last night, my car was fine.  We don't get plowed anyway, so it was more so that we could drive somewhere when we wanted/had to.  I didn't have any trouble getting to work though, the secondaries weren't great, but the main roads and highways were all pretty clear.
