Re: any tips for organizing a nursery??

  • The best thing we did to help with organization was to put a closet system in ($50-$80 at Menards, DH put it in by himself in one evening). The closet is small- maybe 5' wide or so.  We put in a tower of shelves with baskets to house 1- shoes and accessories. 2- burp cloths (now hats and gloves since we don't need burp cloths anymore) 3- Can't remember what put in there!.  On the other shelves without the baskets, we put extra blankets, etc.  We do have a dresser too so all the little essetial cloths were in there, but I would have done them in baskets if I didn't have the dresser drawers.  There are two rods to hang cloths on with shelves over the top of each of them.  We put extra diapers at the way top.  the floor of the closet it empty!  I have more than enough space for her stuff with the extra shelves- don't know how I would have organized without it!   I am now putting an organizer like this in the entryway closet to gain order there as well.

  • Keep in mind that your needs will completely change over the course of a year.  At first you will probably have 4 sizes of clothing and tons of blankets and pacifiers and such.  In one year you will have a mobile baby that needs space to play and you will not longer use most of your baby stuff anymore.  I purchased a trofast system from Ikea that I like.  I used it to organize baby clothes in at first and transitioned it to toys over her first year.  I like to keep the bottom of her closet clear so that I can put her large toys in it easily,

great point! I am trying to keep this in mind as we think about the nursery & registering too!  I like Ikea - I should check that out...thanks!

  • Baskets were always way more helpful than boxes, they provide easy access for things like wipes, rash cream and diapers, but then can be repurposed to help clean up toys quickly later.
