my brother is moving to alaska!

yall may have already seen this on fb. but my brother, sil and baby nephew are moving to alaska! he's been stationed in DC for the past two years and is now moving to his next station. They had a list of like 14 places to choose from and Alaska was their top pick. My brother had to do a job out there about a year ago and loved it.

I've already looked up ticket prices and they're almost $1000 per person. Tongue Tied They'll be out there for 3-4 years. I know it's going to be such an exciting adventure for them, but a  part of me is a little sad I'll be seeing my nephew even less often and they're planning on having more as soon as possible. Plus, we'll hopefully be having a kid during that time too.

my poor mom is so sad that my nephew won't know who she is. it's harder on her, but she's trying to stay positive.

I'm hoping we'll be able to make at least one trip while they're there! And we'll just have to rely on the trusty internet to keep in touch and up to date on our lives.

  • Wow! That is awesome and sad at the same time. Hopefully prices will go down. Everyone could get web cams and do like step does and skpe with them. I always wanted to go to alaska. Maybe your brother can figure out someday to get you there cheaper. A thing your mom could do is to record her reading books to your nephew and his parents can play it for him (either audio or video), this way he will always hear or see grandma.

  • Oh that is so exciting!  Alaska is on our list to visit at least once, we might to a cruise there.

Has your mom and brother thought about doing skype?  You and your mom wont physically be able to be around your nephew and B & SIL, but him seeing you and hearing your voice on skype would be good.  Sending photos and little packages on occasion would be fun too :)

This is an adorable idea, Heather!

  • So cool!  I'd love to go to Alaska.  If/when you decide to go visit, you might want to look into breaking up the tickets.  Buy a RT ticket to Seattle, then buy a RT ticket from Seattle to Alaska.  Tickets from here to there really aren't that pricey, so I just wonder if you could get a cheaper deal doing it that way (even though I know that normally won't work).  And then you could spend a few days in Seattle with me!  Smile

great idea on the recordable book. I'll keep my eye out for one for mom.

mom has been skyping with them while they've been in DC and I have a couple of times. We've never done it w/ all of us though. We'll have to set up weekly skype dates. :)

  • wowie!! alaska!

just make sure everyone has a webcam - skype often. make the most of what you have. if your SIL doesnt have a blog, make her start one so you can follow your nephew as he grows. tape yourselves and email/mail for your nephew to watch. be creative ;)

i'm interested to see if kaylin will recognize me in person - apparently she knows exactly who i am in pictures!

aww..that's a great idea!  maybe I could get my brothers, mom, and granny all to make a tape too, so when he picks out his book for the night he can have a different aunt or uncle reading to him. you so smart, steph :)
