Clicky poll: Grocery Stores
They built a Whole foods near my place, and our Trader Joe's is a bit out of the way since I moved. I was wondering which one you prefer. I would go out of my way (its only out of the way by maybe 10 minutes when I'm running other errands) to grocery shop at a better store.

I LOVE trader joes! We are moving soon and the nearest TJ's is 3 hours away.
There is a whole foods in the area which we do not have here but I would rather have TJ's. I will be going to TJ's after we get settled to stock up on non perishables. DH thinks I'm nutty.
SS--The closest Trader Joe's to us is an hour and a half away--I only go there if we're already in the area (ie, when I flew into that airport, since the TJs is only 10 minutes off the highway, I stopped on my way back home). Our closest Whole Foods is 45 minutes away. Again, I'll stop there if I have a need and am in the area already (usually for business purposes.)
Also, I'm one of those that's a tad skeptical of TJs and their sourcing. I don't know that I'd do the majority of my shopping there either way.
I definitely do the majority of my shopping at the farmers markets during the bountiful spring, summer, and fall months, and supplement with our local Earth Fare market.
Wegmans, because they have liquor license.
We don't have an WFs or TJs in our area at all though, so I honestly can't compare. As grocery stores go, I really do love Wegmans. They have a wide organic selection including produce, meats, bulk foods, and health & beauty products. I often buy their store brand of organic soy milk and organic yogurt.
Since your responses at this point are so evenly split, I would probably try both to see which store you prefer.
Ditto. I have found this to be the case for us as well.
Ditto. If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with Whole Foods.
I much prefer the local co-op and farmer's markets, though, because I can get organic and locally grown foods.

I have a hard time at both TJ and WF, even through there are select products at both that I like. I don't like preprepared food like TJ has, and their fresh section is a little lacking. WF has all the fresh produce, but it's SO expensive that I can't justify shopping there on a regular basis. I got really fed up once when they were selling tomatoes from Canada that were about 3x more expensive than regular ones. What's wrong with tomatoes from Georgia? I had to ask about local produce and it seems like they only offer it occasionally.
May-November I do the bulk of my shopping at the local farmer's market. I'm also hoping to start my own garden this spring. We bought 1/4 of a pasture raised cow locally so we're set on beef. Other meats we get from Costco... still trying to find an affordable alternative for chicken and pork.

I voted Trader Joe's but honestly haven't been to one in a while. When I lived in California I LOVED Henry's Marketplace but they don't have these here. The nearest TJs to me is about 15 minutes away so not a horrible drive but not one I make often.
Right now I get my meat and cheese at the Farmer's Market (straight from the farm), fruits, veggies, and bread from my CSA, and everything else I actually go to Big Lots for because I'm cheap and it's really close to my house. I make my own jams, dips, sauces, and treats at home. So I really only make the TJs run when I need surgar, flour, and other baking needs.
We don't have trader joe's. I go to Whole Foods occasionally but I actually dislike that store. They carry very few local foods/items, much less than even our Kroger which I go to more often. Our Kroger actually has a huge organic section and, like I said, more local items. I don't see the point of buying an organic apple if it was shipped 1500 miles across the country. In addition to Kroger I go to a couple small local stores that sell local produce and other locally made items (jams, honey, breads, flour, sauces, eggs, etc).
SS - We don't have either of those within 2- 2 1/2 hours of us and they aren't easy trips (Indianapolis or St. Louis). So I've never been to either.
I try to do most of our shopping at our local grocery store - they are slowly getting more organic and local items. I can't get everything there though so sometimes my only option is Wal-Mart, which I hate. I try very hard to not go there and to only get what I have to there (and I promise, it really is my only option for some things - I'd have to go at least an hour for any other options and then you have to think about the fuel usage and stuff).
I wish we had a farmers market here that was good -the one my city attempts to do ended up being 2 pickup trucks backed into the park selling corn last year. There is one at an awesome food co-op an hour away and I have vowed to make it to the market this year.
This exactly. TJ''s has a ton of prepackaged processed foods. One of my resolutions is to decrease the amount of TJ's crap that I buy for my kids and to get them eating the meals that we eat. (a lot harder than it sounds). As far as their produce, it's all prepackaged as well which really pisses me off. What a waste!

Oh yes of course. In every season but winter, we do 75% of our shopping at our Farmer's Market. I chose WF for the stuff I can't get at the Farmer's Market, like citrus, milk, and seafood. DH and I work very hard to eat local, but a large amount of our recipes have lemon juice in them, and there's no local lemons in VA.

TJ's has said they will not come to Colorado due to the liquor laws here.
We shop at Sunflower and Whole Foods with a sprinkling of King Soopers.
Really? What are Colorado's liquor laws? Over Christmas, SIL told us about how their TJs in PA don't sell wine, and how in New York they have a separate wine shop next door to the regular TJs.
It's actually not the liquor laws, it's their warehouse locations. From what I understand there isn't a distribution point close enough to CO to make it worthwhile.
