P's been having problems with his ears for 6 months - I mentioned he got tubes last month. So that's been better; his ears have been looking great.
However, he developed a cough we thought was a virus, so we decided to let it run its course. Two weeks later he was treated for a probably sinus infection, but the cough never got better. We noticed if was much, much worse after drinking milk, but it never interfered with his breathing ability so we decided to wait (this poor kid has been to the doctor's once or twice a month since August!) and ask at his well baby check next week.
Then, last Thursday, he almost stopped breathing so I rushed him to the ER. This happened immediately after he started drinking his morning milk. They took xrays which showed no pneumonia but increased inflammation in his lungs, and he got some meds and a nebulizer treatment and he was released. ER doc said he thought it was a virus and said to ask pediatrician about the connection with milk. We got a nebulizer from the pediatrician and he got treatments. We stopped milk for two days, and he seemed to be getting better, so we tried to reintroduce the milk Sunday and he had a reaction again (but not as severe and we had the nebulizer so he got a treatment which helped). I read more about milk allergies, and he had a ton of symptoms (red, sandpaper rash on cheeks, breathing issues, chronic ear infections, constant runny nose - all of which obviously could be attributed to other things).
He had his followup yesterday and his lungs are clear so he can stop the treatments (unless he has a reaction) and they were very receptive to the theory of a milk allergy based on his history and my family history (my dad's sister had a bad milk allergy as a baby), so we switched him to soy and will follow up again next week at his 18 month appt. We may elect to do allergy testing at a later date, but many kids do grow out of it.
So that's the update, and a big part of why I wasn't around at the end of last week much.
Re: P update (health related)
poor baby.
fwiw, I would do the testing. One of C's friend's babies has a really severe milk allergy - severe enough they carry an epi pen. It was ID'd around 14 mo with similar symptoms. She's 2.5 now and her allergy tests are the same, but they'll be retesting her annually to see if she grows out of it. So scary

Thanks for telling me this - that's what I'm worried about. He seems ok with yogurt and cheese, but the milk response developed over time so there's nothing saying it won't get worse with more exposure, and happen with other foods.
