Please recommend your dishwasher detergent

I am so excited that we are getting a dishwasher!  Now I need to decide on which detergent to get.  I prefer tabs or "pouches" of detergent instead of gel or powder.  Also, which rinse aid do you recommend?

Re: Please recommend your dishwasher detergent

  • C&O newbie here, but I've been lurking off and on for awhile.  My two cents:  Although the tabs or pouches might be more convenient, you get a lot more loads for your money out of the gels/powders.  There's also a lot more needless packaging involved.  We really like Finish or Cascade gel.  And we use the Jet Dry rinse aid.
  • I recently switched to the equate(walmart brand) and I can't tell a difference between that and the cascade gel I was using. I do buy jet dry though.

  • I was pretty happy with Cascade powder. No to Finish powder (I bought it on sale but it's not working for me at all).

This exactly. Although here they call it "Great Value". It really is! ha ha.. Jet dry often is included in the Costco coupon pack, if you are a member there.

  • I'm also new to a dishwasher and tried powder but found it's messy and gritty.  A gel is super easy and clean to use.  I use Cascade.  Packs or tabs seem to be a waste of packaging and money, IMO, and I no longer support Wal-Mart's business model, so I don't shop there or buy their Great Value prods.

My rinse agent is water.  I personally feel buying one is generally unnecessary and wasteful.

  • Now that all dishwasher detergents are "phosphate free" by law, I feel like they all suck, even my beloved Cascade Complete gel. Our old bottle, which was the old formulation, was great. The new one is sans phosphates and leaves rainbow-ey streaks all over our pint glasses.
  • I'll weigh in with the hippie vote.  Stick out tongue

We use Trader Joe's brand powder, and vinegar as a rinse aid.

1st to respond to belovedb:  thanks for the vinegar tip.  I thought to try this but wasn't sure.  Throws rinseaid bottle away (it was almost empty) and switches.

To op:  I used Cascade gel, but switched to Palmolive.  I really like both, but Palmolive is a bit cheaper and comparable to the Cascade.  No difference in the cleanliness of my dishes.

  • I use Palmolive Eco -- it's a gel.  As far as I can tell, they all work exactly the same, except for Seventh Generation.  That one didn't work for me at all.

I don't use a rinse aid.  I've never really understood why I'm supposed to need this.
