Headache remedies?

I've been having really bad headaches since I was sick w the stomach bug this weekend. It's hard for me to tell if it's a cold (I'm a tiny bit congested), remnants from the bug, or pregnancy related.

In any case, I can only take tylenol and my doc said I can take zyrtec. I am laying with a compress on my neck right now...but what other remedies for headaches do you guys have that work?

Re: Headache remedies?

  • Sex?

Sorry ;-) ... if you can possibly get peppermint essential oil, dilute it a bit with olive oil or another good carrier oil, and rub it on your temples.  It's a good natural headache remedy.

  • Have you cut back on your caffeine since becoming pregnant?  Do you think it could be from that?  I was having that issue with headaches.  I do allow myself to enjoy coffee in moderation (though I know some pregnant women don't allow themselves any).

Yeah, I have...I don't have it every day- maybe 3-4 days a week; thing is right away I got the bad headaches when I cut it out...but it stopped. Can it come back?

Maybe I'll have some chocolate tonight.

Larissa...gosh the last thing I want is nookie right now....poor h! I have peppermint extract. Do you think I could mix that with oil or is that just f-ed up in all sorts of ways?

  • For me, it depends on what causes the headaches.

Sinus-related: allergy meds, decongestant, hot steam, using a humidifier at night can also prevent me from getting so congested that the sinus pressure gives me a headache

Tension: very hot shower running right on top of my head for just a couple minutes or laying down in a quiet, dark room

Dehydration or low blood sugar: water and food

Most causes: sleep, caffeine (even if it's not a withdrawal headache)

  • You might actually be able to use the peppermint extract without any carrier oils.  The only reason I'd mix peppermint EO to dilute it is to make sure it's not too strong & doesn't burn.  But the extract should be OK.  Rub a little on your temples and see how it does.
  • Sleep. That's all I got. I got a lot of pregnancy related headaches, particularly toward the end, but that might have been due to the PIH.
