PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ? Police
sources tell KDKA that a campaign worker has now confessed to making up
a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter "B" in her face
after seeing her McCain bumper sticker.
Ashley Todd, 20, of
Texas, initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in
Bloomfield and that the suspect became enraged and started beating her
after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.
Police investigating
the alleged attack, however, began to notice some inconsistencies in
her story and administered a polygraph test.
Authorities, however, declined to release the results of that test.
Investigators
did say that they received photos from the ATM machine and "the
photographs were verified as not being the victim making the
transaction."
This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.
The commander added that Todd will face charges; but police have not commented on what those charges will be.
According
to police, investigators working on the interview process detected
several inconsistencies in Todd's story that differed from statements
made in the original police report.
Pittsburgh Police Public
Information Officer Diane Richard released a statement earlier today,
saying: "Because of the inconsistencies in her statements, Ms. Todd was
asked to submit to a polygraph examination which she agreed to do."
No photos of Todd are being released by Pittsburgh Police at this time.
The investigation is continuing as officials determine what charges will be filed.

Re: Mugging "victim" admits it was a lie
And to bring politics into it... she's only hurting her cause.
Bonus points for that extra-special touch of racism by specifying that the 'mugger' was black.
Probably someone who is chemically imbalanced.
Caden and I traded war stories of crazy female friends a few days ago. After telling mine and hearing hers, I'm not shocked by something like this. Just that its received so much coverage.
Why wouldn't it receive this much coverage? The implication of her story is that it was a crazy black Obama supporter attacking a white McCain supporter. It reeks of racism. If race weren't related, why did she say he was black?
It's absolutely disgusting.
Move over Joe-the-plumber. It's all about Ashley-the-cutter now!
Seriously, girlfriend is derranged. Per Salon, her Myspace page said "Lying is the most fun a girl can have with her clothes on." Lol.
I know it's wrong, but I don't care. I'm experiencing some major schadenfreude over here. I'm absolutely thrilled that this isn't true and this girl looks like an idiot. She's a racist a-hole, and I hope she gets jail time!
The her falsly accusing a black man wasn't the story. The story was that she was mugged and mutilated, but not enough so for her to want medical treatment.
First, people are violently mugged every day. In NYC, the safest big city, both my brother and my gay boyfriend have both been mugged. Did it make national news? No. It didn't even make local news.
As for the falsly accusing a non-descript black man? I'm led to believe that is far too common an occurance as well.
So clearly it was the political theme that this girl created, but it shouldn't have been news until it was news. kwim? It shouldn't have been news until there was some sort evidence confirming her story.
But no. Want 15 minutes of fame? Beat yourself up and say the motives were political.
I think you give her too much credit. Her eyes look like mine after I sleep in my mascara. Lol.
Haha, I haven't looked at the pictures. That's even more pitiful it made news, then.
Is it weird that I was expecting her to be a petite cheerleader type? All the psychotic girls I've known personally have been really pretty - odd the associations we make, huh?
Anyway, that's just sad. I can't even muster up any angry feelings toward her. I just feel bad for her...not in a sweet way, either, but in a 'wow, she really must have issues' sort of way.
How funny. She actually looks so much like this crazy republican woman I knew in law school. I'm not sure if she is carve her self crazy, but she spent most of her time in class searching for American Girl dolls on ebay. She was a grown married woman!!! Yet she always knew the answers when she got called on....
Gotcha, MD. You're right, I hate that it was all over the news before it could be remotely confirmed. But that's how this stuff works. When it's a potentially dramatic event -- as campaign-related mutilation would be -- the details come out in bits and pieces, and often the information is wrong. On 9/11, I remember constantly refreshing My Yahoo and CNN and first seeing that a small personal plane had hit the tower, then a commuter plane, etc. So while it's appalling that this got coverage before
And I don't think the NYC muggings (although sad!) are exactly apples to apples. This wasn't just "someone stole $60". It was "someone stole $60, and carved a B into my cheek because I support McCain." It's intended to create fear of Obama supporters and ultimately, Obama. It's much more than someone stealing my purse on P St, however traumatic that may be. The election-related mutilation, as it was portrayed, was the true element here, and race plays into that.
And yeah, that "black eye" was a hot mess. It wasn't even good theatre makeup [;-)]
What a fuuking morAn. I'm actually glad she went further than the fake mugging story b/c now she has a permanent reminder of what a lunatic she is - a backwards scarlet letter. Not only are you stupid enough to carve up your own face, you did it wrong! That is one, big, mammoth, epic FAIL.
Please send her to jail. Or the looney bin then to jail.
This is now entering my lexicon right next to stop eating the paste special.
Lol. Then I should have at least used proper spelling: "I'm not sure if she is carve herself crazy."
