Re: If you could change what you do for a living

  • Well, being realistic, no, I would not change my job. I have always wanted to be a teacher and I love what I do. Sometimes I can become very frustrated, but I don't think I would ever do something else.  I may go to a different area (try instructing a college course) or a different position (ESOL lead teacher), but I always think I'll stay in education.

Now, if we are talking about if anything were possible, I would love to open a scrapbook shop.  Or be a travel agent.  Or a wedding planner.  But I doubt any of that will really ever happen.

Oh yeah, and I can't wait to be a SAHM.  Hopefully that will happen sooner, rather than later.

  • Oh yeah, without a doubt!

SAHW would be fantastic. I'm really gunning for this to happen in the next few years!

I also wouldn't mind teaching, in fact I plan to go back to school once I'm able to SAH and I'm probably go for education.

  • I'm a SAHM now and I love it. But I would like to be a travel agent and make some money doing it. I do it now for all my family but I don't get paid. If I knew how to start I would do it!!
  • Something with baking, whether a home bakery business or opening a bakery. Wish I had discovered my love of baking before my expensive grad degree....

I haven't figured out what I want to be "when I grow up", but I feel the same way about my masters Smile

  • I really wish I would have gotten a nursing degree. I think it's smart to go into the medical field because there will always be a need. I'm a social worker so feeling like I am helping people is important to me but since I got my Master's degree I have not been able to find anything in my field where I live. I always see tons of job ads for nurses though. I really didn't know all of the different capacities nurses could work in. I wish I had considered it more before I went to graduate school.
  • If I had known the path my life would have taken, I would have simply studied Mandarin in college and studied abroad and taught in China to gain fluency to help my prospects of joining the FS.  Oh, and I would have applied a few years ago when they were on a hiring binge instead of now with a new Congress that seems to favor funneling money toward flexing our military might over the use of diplomacy.

I think I would still want to do what I'm trying to do.  Part of me would love to be a doctor- perhaps a pediatric oncologist- but I long ago fell victim to self doubt of my math and science skills (even though I always scored higher in those tests).  In reality too, I just have too much of a wanderlust to settle into a career like that.

  • I would love to be a writer - maybe a novelist, maybe a children's author, who knows. But definitely writing.

  • Well, I am prefectly happy with being a SAHM, and I love my old job (which I sometimes still do) as a floral designer, but what I have always wanted to do the most was be published (preferably bestselling) novelist. Or have a career in interior design.

  • I would love to be a trauma nurse, or a flight nurse. I've wanted to be a nurse for a long time, but I just can't deal with all the crap. I deal with enough crap and I'm not even on the caring for patients end of it.

  • I love being a SAHM.  I would be perfectly happy doing this for the rest of my life :)

But, if I had to do something (but not for the sake of money) I would like to open a coffee/bagel shop.  I would make it super cute and cozy.  Like, people would want to come to my shop just to hang out and do crossword puzzles while they sip on their coffee.  But IDK, maybe this is a bad idea considering I don't even like coffee!  But it sounds like it would be fun :)

  • Editing.  Seriously, I would love to sit in an office all day, marking up someone else's work.  Even now, it is my most favorite task at work.  I like telling others they are wrong and beating them with my Blue Book in hand.

  • I wish I hadn't been so stubborn in college and went ahead and pursued more medical oncology research.  I'm trying to go that route now with a Master's (someday) but it is a lot harder to start at square one then it would've been when my skills were fresh.

Overall, I love what I do but it frustrates me that I wish I could do more to help some of the patients I work with.

  • I wanted to be a lawyer after high school which is why I took Lit in college.  Then I met several lawyers who insisted that I would not love being a lawyer.  Really I would like to do some sort of therapy - physical, occupational, speech, art, music, counseling.   Unfortunately all bio classes I've ever taken I've gotten hard C's so I didn't go that route.  Maybe when we can afford for me to SAH I'll go back as an old lady :)

My dream is opening a scrabook shop!  H and I have talked about it numerous times, but every time we think about it, the timing just isn't right.  You really have to do it up to be able to survive, with all the Internet shops out there!

I think I'm going to love being a SAHM, but the only other regret I have is not having a nursing degree.  I have a Masters in Health Service Management, but it's REALLY hard to find a GOOD job in the field unless you have some sort of clinical background.

So weird. My job never makes these kinds of lists, lol. There is something very satisfying about taking a crappy piece of writing and making it work, though. Especially if I'm asked to justify my changes. I'd love to write for a magazine. Preferably, a scrapbook magazine. :-)

Wait a minute, how did I not know there were other scrapbookers here? I would love to go to your scrapbook store if you opened one. I miss the Scrapbook Shoppe so much. Boo.

Yes! I would love to sit and correct people's bad grammar and punctuation without them thinking I'm a jerk. This makes me want to vent real quick. One of my cousins over-uses the apostrophe on every FB status update she makes. I'm talking like "Going to Disney, can't wait to go on ride's and take lots of pic's!" I want to murder her.. so I love imagining a job like this where I could fix all those horrible mistakes.

  • This is a great post. I am seriously considering a career change. I am a nurse (LPN) and while I love the people I work with and the job for the most part I am BORED. I would love to go back to school for a therapy of some kind PT, OT, ST but at my age, the fact that I would prob have to quit my job once I get to clinicals and I have a kid going to college very soon it just seem like a smart time. I would love to turn my passion for cakes into a business but I don't see the funding coming in for that anytime soon!
  • I would love to be a SAHM.  I would have to have something to keep my hands busy though, so I would want to make something to sell-jewlery, hats for kids and handbands.

I also love photography.  Although, I haven't picked up my camera in so long.  Or, I would be a travel agent.

  • I would love to be a SAHM(once we have kids) or have my own event planning business..trying to work on both within the next few years so we'll see! :-)

THIS! minus the SAHM part :(

  • I would love to open a shop like this as well.  And here is SH there isn't really anything like that.

  • Run a beach hut in Thailand or Roatan. Vend at music festvals (did that for a summer, but then reality set in). Have a vegetarian cafe.
  • Realistically, I would stay in my job now because I love what I do (school counselor).  If they do away with counselor's like they always threaten to do, I would teach 1st grade, or GIFTED students.

But, if I could I would open a dance studio.  My dad planned on doing this for me, if I chose to do it.  He said, "You can go to college and I pay for it, or you can open a dance studio and I will get it off the ground financially and then it will be yours."  I told him i wanted to go to college, to have a backup in case I couldnt dance for some reason (injury, etc).  He thought I made a wise decision, but sadly he passed away before I could ever choose either.  So, here I sit with 90,000 in student loans and no dance studio.  :-(  But, I do love what I do!

    This exactley!!

But if I had to stay in my field, I would rather teach at a PA school

  • Yeah, I think it would be so fun!  We have had a few open here in SH, but they never last long at all.  I never really shopped in them cause they were so expensive compared to Joanne's and Michaels.
