lasik

I really want to have the procedure done, but haven't ever been able to afford it.

Just curious if anyone here has had it done.

Don had it done about 10 yrs ago when it was still new before he went into the Army.  He doesn't think I should get it b/c he still has to wear glasses or contacts since the procedure didn't make his vision 20/20, but I then again it was done when it was brand new and things have come a long way in 10 years!

Re: lasik

  • We have 2 friends that have gotten in done in the last couple years.  They have both been extremely happy with it and no longer need glasses.  DH really wants to get it done.  We're going to try and budget for it in the next couple of years I think.

  • I got it almost three years ago and I have to say hands down it is one of the absolute best things I have ever done in my life. I went to Kremer Laser. It is still unbelievable to me to be able to see without glasses or contacts.

Mine has a lifetime guarantee - if my vision goes south (aside from reading glasses, no one is immune to those), they will correct it for free. That was a big concern of mine because I had AWFUL astigmatism, and they were unsure if they'd be able to get it all, and even if they did they weren't sure it wouldn't grow back.

I did it when I started this job - I had never had a flexible spending health account before that, so I put the max in there, and MFD gave me a huge chunk and I covered the rest.

  • K had it done about 5-6 years ago, and he hasn't needed glasses or contacts again.  And his vision was BAD.  He complains sometimes now that his vision is a bit blurry -  mostly when he's tired or the air is dry.  But they tell you up front when you have it done that it may not last forever and you may have to have it done again.  He loves it and keeps trying to convince me to have it done.

I also have several friends at work who have had it done more recently.  All of them love it, had short recoveries and highly recommend it to me.

Does your work offer you an FSA?  If so, you can hold money aside in there, tax free, to have the procedure.  That way you're getting it done, and saving a bit of money by not having to pay taxes on that portion of income.  That's what I plan to do eventually.

  • My dad had it done 14 years ago (??). I'm pretty sure he had it donw when he was 40 so kinda late in the game but it's amazing for him. He was blind as a bat (literally) and now doesn't need anything. I've know other people to get it done too and they all loved it. I'd say it's definitely worth the money. GL!

  • I've always wanted to get it done too.  I'm just worried about the long term effects.  Also, it's really expensive and I just can't afford it now.  Plus, I look really cute in my glasses and they cost me a good chunk of change!

  • I would love to get it done, but honestly, I can't see it ever really happening. At least not in the near future with my lack of money issues lately.

Maybe when I'm rich and famous. HA!
