Oh yeah. This and circumcising the boy babies.
Just posted.
And owl costume markups.
So, instead of saying breastmilk is best, she is saying that moms who breastfeed are best.
This seems a little insulting to me, no?
Women who breastfeed are more likely to do other things that will make their babies healthier.
No, I think she's just saying that women who breastfeed are likely to be wealthier, better educated, with better healthcare, with more access to a variety of resources. It's hard to separate all that out and say it's the breastfeeding or breastmilk that improves babies' health.
For some things, yes. It looks like even she agrees breastmilk is beneficial for some things.
But then she is saying that wealthier, educated parents are better mothers.
I am kind of shocked that poorer women woulnd't breastfeed given how expensie formula is. I almost feel formula is for the richy riches.
I read it as saying that wealthier parents have healthier babies, not that they are better parents. That's a factual claim, not a judgment. I think "willing and able to go the extra mile" is a key element. You can long to be the best parent in the world but if you have limited resources, your child is likely to be less healthy.
Formula is expensive, but breastmilk isn't really free. If you have to work long hours with short breaks in an unsupportive enviroment, you may not be able to "afford" to breastfeed. You can get formula from the state, but not the time and support BFing takes.
It shouldn't even have to be an extra mile thing though. Everyone, regardless of financial status should have the same access to medical care that would allow them to make extra claims. I realize there are things above and beyond that. But if we are just talking about things to keep a baby reasonably healthy, it doesn't take anything beyond that.
And I think the emotional cost of breastfeeding is definitely a concern for many.
In another article she says the decision to breastfeed makes as great a difference as actually breastfeeding.
I like the part about "good enough" mothering. I wonder how having a mom in luv with medieval history is going to affect my kids (although the idea that medieval parents didn't care for their children is almost entirely false, parenting was more relaxed). Of course, I can't seem to wean before the age of 2, maybe I can blame it on that too.
"The meek shall inherit the earth" isn't about children. It's about deer. We're all going to get messed the fuckup by a bunch of cloned super-deer.- samfish2bcrab
Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
We dont have this and we are the wealthier people (I assume. either that or I have just discovered I am poor).
And I see what she is getting at but her science doesn't seem any more solid.
Overall, I think arguments on either side just get bogged down. Feed your kid and shut the fukc up about it.
