New Downtown GR Framework

Did anyone else see this report/article? I found it @ TV8. What would you want to add to downtown GR?

Our new office is in the building just behind San Chez so I'm just starting to find out what is downtown.

Re: New Downtown GR Framework

  • I took a survey on this topic about a month ago, and similar to what they mentioned in the article I said more shopping. I think downtown is filled with great restaurant choices, museums, etc. but there aren't a lot of options for shopping. I would love to be able to hit up downtown on a weekend and walk from shop to shop. I live in the East Hills area and I love being able to do that there. It would be nice to see the same thing downtown.
  • More shopping would definitely be nice.  As someone who works downtown, I'd also like to see more casual lunch spots like along the lines of Panera Bread, Zoup, etc.

I miss the wrap place that used to be down there by Bull's head. What was that called? I loved the variety. I think they have all gone under.

In my little dream world where money, weather, and logistics wasn't an issue, I would love for a nice river walk area. It would be a dream world where Dwayne Faust would be a reality and not a fanasty.

Roly Poly.  That place was good.  There is a new restaurant in that spot almost every year it seems like.

  • Interesting.  I don't frequent Downtown much.  Why?  Parking!  I hate parking a mile away from my destination because parking is $8 or they've got parking spots blocked for no apparent reason.  Example:  Nick and I were going to 25 Kitchen and Bar at 3:30 on a Saturday and for an entire block, there were orange "NO Parking" bags on the meters.  There wasn't hardly anyone down there, and when we left at 6:30 there still wasn't much traffic, so there couldn't have been any important events going on.  We literally had to walk close to 1/2 mile to get to the restaurant.

I wish they did free parking in some of the lots on weekdays/nights.  If they did this, I would be WAY more likely to spend my money Downtown.  If I'm meeting friends for a drink or dinner by myself after work, I don't feel comfortable walking a mile to my car at 10:00 at the end of the night just to park for free, so I usually suggest going somewhere in town, close to home.

  • I can completely understand about parking. We have meeters by the office which are good for 2 hours and 2 garages within half a block which change $1 per half hour with a $9 max. I'm not sure what to do because we can come and go a lot in one day. I've looked into the options for a monthly access card and as well as the phone apps for the meters but still not sure. Some lots open up after 5pm for free but they don't outright say they do so you kinda have to guess and cross your fingers.
  • Free parking!!  I'm so spoiled by Holland that I forget I'll have to pay to park even for quick errands in GR.  I hate it.  A lot of the validations, if there, are tricky to figure out too.  I saw on the San Chez website the first time I went there that they'd validate an hour's parking.  When I asked my server, she didn't have a clue (this was Bfast time).  I was peeved.  I used to know of some good free spots and now those have meters too, which sucks.

I agree about more shops.  I'd like that too, but a diversity, not twenty trinket stores.  Also, luncheon type places would be great, but locally owned, not chains.  One thing I love about many of the GR restaurants is that they aren't chains.
