possible new job?

I was asked to possibly plan a friend of mines wedding. They got engaged on New Years Eve. Im super excited. I was thinking of starting my own business after we got married. This could be my chance.

I need your help. Im making a binder of everything we needed to plan. This is what I have so far.

- Date
- Bridal Party
- Budget
- Guest List/ Address Book
- Day Of Schedule
- Seating Chart
- Music List/ DJ
- Venue
- Photographer/ Videographer
- Invitations/ Place cards
- Gifts/ Favors
- Hotel
- Florist
- Dress/Tux
- Makeup/ Hair
- Cake
- Caterer

What do you think is a decent price to charge? Since this is my first event, I was going to go cheaper then I usually would. I didnt have a planner so I dont know what is normal. I googled it and it said between $1000-$2500. The wedding will be in FL. They also live around Chicago, IL.

Re: possible new job?

  • I have no idea, as I didn't have a planner and not a lot of people in our area really do. I would say that range sounds reasonable though. Being that it's a friend and it's your first wedding, I would set a starting point and don't sell yourself short, but be willing to have a discussion about price to see where you're both comfortable.

The business law student inside me wonders if you've thought of putting together a basic contract for services. I don't think you'd need anything elaborate, but you definitely want to protect yourself.

Hope it goes well, and good luck!!

  • I had a wedding coordinator. She is a friend of the family, and I have no idea what my Mom paid her.

If I were the bride, I would not be willing to pay 1k for someone who has never planned a wedding other than their own.

I'm not being snarky, just honesty. You are just starting out, you essentially have no idea what you are doing, or what you are getting your self into. Unless you have planned other weddings besides your own.. You are responsible for negotiating contracts with her with various vendors, and all of that mess.

If it were me, and I was just starting a business, I think I would do my first client, maybe even the first few for either pro bono, or next to nothing.

Good Luck! I really hope it works out for you!

  • Oh I will have a contract if I do this.

Im not going to charge them $1000. I would charge them something around a few hundred. Weve even talked about them paying our tickets for the wedding and that would be my pay. I was thinking down the road. Sorry I didnt specify that.

  • I think the plane tickets are definitely reasonable.

Where in FL are they getting married, has she said?

  • Because it is going to a destination I would add it part of the cost of travel and lodging.  You would probably be going anyway and would have to pay for that.  But since you are planning it you will have to spend more time down in FL then you would if you were just a guest.

I would also suggest adding in a section for dress and any activities for guests since it is a destination wedding.  You may also want to find out if they want you to help with the rehersal dinner.

    BTW, where in FL?
