Smoking Vent

I'm now sitting in a different area of my office, and I like it a lot. The only thing is, it's near this certain side door, which is the door that all the smokers exit out of to smoke. It leads to a patio with tables where people can sit. There's a big bucket that acts as an ash tray and the bucket is right next to the door. Any time that door is opened or closed, it smells horrid. There are about 60 people who work here, and less than 10 of them smoke, but this is still a big problem. All the people who sit near me (which includes a PG lady) have complained to each other about how much they hate the smell. These are new seats for us-- apparently the people who sat in this area before us also hated the smell but never complained.

I talked to our office manager about it and she talked to our safety manager and security manager, both of whom said they didn't even think the patio should be an "allowed place" for the smokers to go, due to some different reasons. So our office manager is supposedly looking into the situation to see if she can ask the smokers to smoke elsewhere. But of course she says there won't be an immediate solution. One thing that I think might somewhat help would be if that stupid bucket ashtray thing wasn't right by the door! I was venting with another CW about the bucket and he went outside and moved it a lot farther away. But we're both sure it'll be moved back to it's normal position by tomorrow. I don't see why it can't at least stay far away from the door.

Gross, I really like my new desk but I hate having to smell cigarettes 5-6x a day.

Re: Smoking Vent

  • I use to smoke when I drank in my pre-Macy days.  It was TOTALLY gross and I am so glad that I am no longer a "smoker".  But I was always a mindful smoker and I would stay away from anyone else when I was smoking.  There is nothing worse than lingering smoke.......or the smell of ashtrays.  Yuck.  Smoking is so gross and I am embarrassed to admit that I smoked from time to time.

I think you did the right thing by speaking to your bosses and moving the ashtray.  It's not fair for you to have to sit next to an ashtray all day.  Hopefully it all gets resolved soon.

  • That would totally gross me out, too.  I'm not a fan of cigarette smoke and I smell it really easily...I guess I'm super sensitive to it.  You have every right to complain.

I'm choosing this topic as my rant for the day....

     1.  Why do smokers get unlimited amounts of breaks during the day and nobody says anything?  "Where's Marcy? I need her to sign something urgent." "Oh, she's out smoking."  And that acceptable!!!  If I took 10-15 minute breaks every 2 hours to paint my nails, people would have a problem with it.  Boss: "Hey, 'inthesun' I need you to sign this."  Me:  "Just wait 10 minutes, I'm painting my nails."  I DON'T THINK SO!!!!

     2.  Why do they smoke all up in my breathing space?  I know you have the right to smoke on the beach, but I'm here enjoying the FRESH air!!  Get a raft, go half way to Cuba, and light up there, please.

    3.  The smell is awful.  Have you ever seen a perfume bragging to smell like cigarette smoke?  Every time you smoke, you bathe in that smell.  Gross.

    4.  Why do smokers get offended that I have a rant about this?  I'm sure someone on this board is a smoker and is ready to flame me.  Go for it.  You have a habit...you can't quit...gimme all of your excuses...but you still smell bad.

    5.  Thank you to those considerate smokers.  I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

  • That sucks, I would have complained too if I were you.  And I also hated when I used to work at a restaurant and all the other people got smoke breaks all the time.  I was like, can I get a break too as a reward for not killing myself or others around me with toxic fumes?

I hope they remedy the situation.  They should make the smokers in your work go smoke in a smelly alley.  :)

  • I think it's good that you said something.  I doubt most people would.  My mom smokes and with the Alzheimer's her habits have gotten worse.  She'll light the cigarette up before she walks across the house to go outside to smoke or she'll literally stand halfway in the doorway and think her smoke isn't still coming in.  Love her to death, but hate the habit.  Then again, my parents used to smoke in the house and in the car when we were little.  It turned all four of us off from smoking so I guess it was good in a perverse way.
  • My MIL used to come over to our place to let plumbers/electricians/etc in when we needed something done at the condo and would smoke in our place.  She'd say she didn't, but we're non-smokers, just cause she couldn't smell it doesn't mean we couldn't.  I'm not a fan of the smell of smoke, I probably would have said something, and moved the bucket.

That said, I must confess that I was packing some stuff up and found a sweater that she had lent me before she passed away.  I found myself smelling it, I could still faintly smell her "NOW" brand cigarettes.  It's weird how a smell can bring back memories.

  • You should have your HR rep ask your building property or liability insurance company if they have policies.  Most do - you have to be x feet from the building to smoke.  I betcha that having the butt bucket that close to the door is a huge liability for fire damage.  Not to mention, who is responsible for the smoker's table outside (could that go up in smoke?) and how are these employee's treated re: breaks for smoking?  I would bring that up in a heartbeat, esp. if I noticed one employee was abusing the break policies.

  • Did the container get moved today? I hope it stayed away from the door. I can only imagine how awful the smell can get. I nearly gag on smoke.
  • Hey girls, thanks for the replies! As of this morning, the "butt bucket" was still where I put it last night, which is good. Hopefully it will stay there today. And if it does, I'll be able to see if the smoke smell lightens up a bit for me.

Re #4- I know! I can't stand when smokers get offended about stuff like this. I don't see how they can get offended. Everything we're saying is right.

Re #5- I agree. But I still wish they would quit :)
