House Insurance ?

How much does your house insurance increase every year?  Does it increase every year?

I'm in shock at the difference between this year and last year, so I'm just curious if I should flip out (I already did a little lol) or if this is to be expected.  We did file a claim last year for the first time--for wind/hail damage to our roof--but seriously, this is ridiculous.

Re: House Insurance ?

  • Oh great... we filed a claim last year too. Can't wait to see what ours will be....
  • Ours didn't go up any this year, but we didn't make any claims either.  I imagine the claim is what caused it to jump, hopefully it will go back down next year.

  • We will get our statement next month but I called to get a quote a couple of months ago when we got the statement for our cars (which nearly tripled and we didn't have a claim) and it went up quite a bit.  I don't remember how much though.

  • Ours went up 58%, that is ridiculous IMO.  I called our insurance company when I received the statement last week and she said it was due to inflation (them increasing the value of our house) and b/c of our claim.  I understand it going up a little b/c of the claim--but isn't that what the insurance is effing for?!?  So not only did we have to pay the difference for the roof that they didn't cover, but now we have to pay 58% more than we did last year.

The truly ironic/hilarious part is that when I called, the lady said she would send me a new quote based on their "new rating system".  I got the quote via email a few days later----it was for +$1,000 MORE than what we owe for this year.  Their new rating system can suck it.  I'll be calling our agent tomorrow.
  • It went up a lot last year. We expect it to go up this year. We've have two new roofs in two years.
  • From the H~ Because of all of the claims made this year every single company is going to increase 15-60%. Boo.

That's what they told me when I called yesterday. I said "so because of weather everyone is getting screwed?", she said "well, basically yes". At least she was honest I guess? We're still figuring things out, but I trust your H so at least I know she wasn't just making stuff up. Stick out tongue

It makes sense. Insurance spreads the costs across all parties and the risk. The alternative is to not have insurance. We would have paid $35K out of pocket over the last two years after getting our roof totaled twice. But since the bank owns part of our house, they want us to keep it in good condition so that means we need insurance.

That is what they told me too, but it still doesn't really make sense to me.  I mean a small percentage increase I understand (5-10%) but 60%!  We pay higher premiums becuase we live in an area with bad weather.  Why isn't that what covers them in the event of damage?

I agree.  I totally understand an increase, but an increase of 60% is CRAZY.
