Rug disinfectant?

Last night we had a major toilet malfunction.  The whole bathroom had about 1/2 an inch of water and a 3'x2' space on the carpet outside of the bathroom is wet.  What can I use to kill the germs?

Re: Rug disinfectant?

  • I would replace the carpet honestly.  I'm assuming sewage is involved?  I would be tearing that stuff up this minute and bleaching the living daylights out of whatever surface is underneath it.  I will also mention that my steam mop has a tray to sanitize carpet but you are way past that in my mind now.

  • Ditto. Not only do you have contamination from the sewage but you'll end up with mold under and in the carpet from the water. Ugh, this is why carpet DOES NOT BELONG IN BATHROOMS!!!!!!!!!! Not your fault though. I'd tear it up and lay tile down. For such a small space it will be pretty inexpensive, like under $200.

Okay, PP's are being a bit rash.  If there was human waste in the toilet water, please use carpet shampoo and a carpet cleaning machine.

If it just didn't stop running and it was fresh water, get a wet/dry vac and suck as much water out as you can.  Then, set up fans so that the carpet and the pad dry fully.

It's a huge PITA to replace a small section of carpet.  Not only do you have to find the exact same kind, but it's definitely going to look different than the older carpet because of the wear and tear.

    This.

Vingear is a great disinfectant. Mix a couple tablespoons in a spray bottle full of water and spritz your carpet after (or before) you steam clean it. I would test a small hidden section of carpet first though to make sure it doesn't stain.
