I was just yelled at by my neighbor (the same one who almost hit me while I was running on the sidewalk).
Bear was outside for 10 minutes and she happened to walk down to get her mail and stopped at my driveway on her way back just as I was letting him in. She took that opportunity to yell at me for putting him out in a snow storm and yelled something about reporting me for animal abuse. I wanted to yell back, "He had to poop!" and various other comments about how she raises her kids but hello, rude! so I didn't.
Anyway, does anyone else have a dog that loves to be outside when it's cold? Bear's year-round ultra fur coat makes him super miserable in the summer but once fall hits he could happily sit outside all day. I love when it's snowing and he comes in all covered, or when he digs in the snow with his nose and gets a doggie santa beard. So.freaking.cute!
And for the record, he prefers to wait until after it snows to go out but sometimes he just can't hold it that long and he has resisted my plea for him to use the cat's litter box. But he does have his own towel and he gets to dry off as soon as he gets in. I don't force him to go out, swear.
Re: Dogs & Snow
First, I love the "He had to poop" comment hahahha
Second, that is crap-so many dogs love the snow/cold. At my dog's daycare when it's really cold or snowy out they make all the dogs come in to warm up and my dog as well as many of the others whine to go back out after 10 min.
My dog loves to leap through the snow and stuffs his face in it!
That's crazy! Henry loves the snow - running in it, shoveling it around with his nose. And even if a dog doesn't love it, they're a dog and they have to go out to do their business. By the sound of it, Bear isn't a tiny little chihuaha, so I'm sure he's just fine.
I got yelled out this summer for having Henry sit in the front seat with the windows down while I ran into the library for no more than 5 minutes to get a book from the desk (I was even in 5 minute parking). A man accosted me and told me I was a terrible person, that it was animal abuse, that he was too hot, and how would I like it if someone made me sit in the car. I told him for 5 minutes with the window down, I'd be fine, and so is he. It's good that people look out for animals, but I guess they don't need to be so damn crazy while they do it!
Good grief to both stories! If it were my neighbor, I'd assume the dog had to do his business and/or likes the snow.
What an effing nutjob! Um fyi Danielle's neighbor...dog's can't use toilets for one thing and I think it would be more cruel to leave him in the house all winter until the snow goes away than let him out in the snow to poop. Jeez!
My dog is scrawy, thin haired and only 30 pounds (definitely not an arctic breed) and he LOVES the snow! When we take him out at night he wants to just run and play even if it's below zero and gusty wind. He'd be out all the time if he could.
I've definitely called the police/animal control on people before for leaving their dog in the car in hot weather. However, the two times I've done it the dog was in the car with the windows rolled all the way up and it was longer than 10 minutes. Usually if I pull in somewhere and I see a dog in the car in the summer, I'll wait for the owner to come out or go in to the store and note how long I was in there. I wouldn't bother calling the authorities or saying something to the owner if the windows were cracked and it was only 5 minutes though. 5 minutes to run into the library, your dog was fine! It's good people are so aware of how others take care of their pets, but not to the point where they're nitpicking at responsible owners.
I don't think it's crazy at all to call police/animal control in those situations because obviously it can be so dangerous if the windows are up, and it makes more sense than screaming at a person. I would have been ticked in my situation as my windows were almost all the way down and I pulled in after this man pulled in (he was in five minute parking too).
Where can I find dogs that love the snow (besides my mom's two samoyed huskies)??
My two go out to potty but they wont leave the porch. DH has to blow potty paths in the yard so they do their business in the yard and not the porch! lol
Moxie goes from 0-Spastic in about 3 seconds when she sees the snow coming down. We take her hiking around Mt. Apatite all winter long and we have to watch her so that she doesn't go in the quarry's little ponds. Yes, she would swim in the water (after breaking through the ice). And she's not a Huskie or Malamut. She's a lab-rottie-boxer mix. Double coat, but short hair.
And while, yes, it's not good for dogs to be out forever because they don't always know when to come in (Moxie is prettier than she is smart), unless they're cutting their pads on the ice or shivering, they're pretty dang hearty in the snow. My dog growing up used to take off at night on purpose when it snowed-- it was warmer than when it wasn't snowing because he would dig a little hollow in the snow for himself and it would insulate him.
Ignorant biddy, your neighbour!
