Who did he want if not Palin?
The xp about GOP members jumping ship has this bit in it:
Matthew
Dowd, a former Bush strategist, let the cat out of the bag: "They
didn't let John McCain pick the person he wanted to pick as
VP...[McCain] knows, in his gut, that he put somebody unqualified on
the ballot. He knows that in his gut, and when this race is over that
is something he will have to live with... He put somebody unqualified
on that ballot and he put the country at risk, he knows that."
Do we know who he wanted to pick? Better still, do we know who's idea it was to give Palin the nod?

Ditto this. Liberman has to be one of the most uninspiring men in office. And with the October "suprise" of the economy going to hell in a handbasket, I'm fairly certain the outcome would be the same.
Hehe, before I read your second sentence, I thought, 'but what about Romney??'
I think Romney could have won this for us, though it certainly would have still been a rocky campaign with all the negative ads he put out about McCain during the primaries.
Maybe she wasn't considering him.
I do think his choices were limited because there weren't many people with enough confidence in him to join him.

I also heard Romney didn't want the VP slot b/c he wants to run against Obama in 2012...
