Dogs & Prednisone

Hey girls. I posted this on the pets board too, but I thought some of you may have some ideas as well.

Our bulldog Brodie is on Prednisone and it of course is making him think he's ravenous 24/7. He wakes us up at 3am every morning trying to get his breakfast and in the evenings when we're home, he's whining at his food bowl non stop. I've tried splitting up the feedings, I've tried adding veggies etc and nothing I'm doing is helping.

Any ideas on how we can help him feel more full without adding a ton of extra calories? I was going to try switching him to "light" food so he can eat a little more of it...but I don't know of that's a good solution. I'm waiting on a call back from his regular vet. He's on it long term, so I can't just start feeding him a bunch of extra food. TIA.

Re: Dogs & Prednisone

  • Cosmo was recently on prednisone & it made him a hungry (& thirsty) hippo.  We supplemented his dinner with broccoli & gave him a broccoli or green bean snack before bed.  I'm a sucker, so we upped his food a little bit too.  It helped, but we could tell he still wasn't full.  We called the vet & the vet said since he wasn't going to be on it for too long, just keep doing & he'll adjust once he's off the meds.

How long is your dog going to be on prednisone?

ETA: Sorry, didn't see the long term part.  Hope someone else has some suggetions!

  • Sadly, until we have to put him to sleep. (So hopefully awhile!) It's helping with his terminal mast cell cancer.

His hunger seems to be getting worse, but part of me also wonders if he's now realizing that whining=food. We haven't been feeding on demand, but we have been a little lax with his schedule. I've been trying to trick him broccoli but it I don't know if it's helping.

It's annoying lol...but we can deal with it. I was just hoping to make him happier. Maybe I'll try his 2 cups of food at dinner and then a little broccoli right before bed. Thanks!

  • Dinner time for our boys is 7 pm.  At 6:30, Cosmo gets in your face & stares at you.  Kayne goes into the laundry room and pushes his bowl around.  Obnoxious?  Totally.  We don't mean to feed on demand, but I think they're realizing if they do it long enough, they'll get food.  They don't see the time is actually why they're getting fed.

It probably doesn't help that when they need water, Kayne will scratch at that bowl & we'll fill it on demand.

Haha. Yeah, that sounds like Brodie. He just stares at the laundry room door (where his bowls are.) Then he hangs his head low and kind of looks past his left leg back at me if I'm on the couch. THEN he'll lightly scratch at the open door of the laundry room. Yesterday he actually turned around and barked loudly at me. Lil shiit.

Last night though, even after he had just eaten, he acted like he was still starving. A girl on the pets board suggested green beans. Maybe they're more filling than broccoli? Who knows. I'll try a greenbean bedtime snack.

  • Ha!  When Cosmo gets frustrated, he starts barking at you.  I'm such an enabler... I just look at him and say, "What?" and he barks again.  My dogs are obnoxious.

Ha! This is me too. Sometime he'll throw a full on tantrum though. Whining, barking and then he has this spastic dance he does throwing himself all around. At 100lbs it's quite a sight to behold. I just calmly stare at him and when he stops to look at me I say," Are you done? That was ridiculous! I cannot condone that kind of behavior. Go lay down." lol

I think we have the same dog.......

Seriously, Cosmo is ridiculous when he's frustrated.

  • I will second the green beans. My sisters bulldog has intense allergies and is on prednisone on and off. When he is on the prednisone, she gives him a can of green beans a day. He gets half the can with breakfast and the other half as a late night snack. She says it has cut down on him acting like he has not had food in days.
  • I would think that some high fiber additions to the food would help, like oatmeal and pumpkin.

  • Thanks ladies! Between all of you and the pets board I've gotten some great suggestions. Green beans, oatmeal and pumpkin have all been suggested across the board. Looks like I have a little Brodie grocery shopping trip ahead of me after work.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a crazy dog.  Both of our 90-lb golden retrievers do this, its hilarious when they both get going at the same time.
