Recommend Netflix documentaries, please!

I watched "King of Kong" a couple weeks ago (ACK! SO GOOD!) and just finished "The Wild, Wonderful Whites of West Virginia" (ACK! SO TRASHY!).

What have you watched and enjoyed?

Re: Recommend Netflix documentaries, please!

  • I don't remember if you're an Eddie Izzard fan, but I watched Believe: The Eddie Izzard story a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. It's available on streaming, too.

  • Life After Tomorrow!

There are a bunch of Mormon ones but I think they're only on DVD and not instant.

Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
  • I enjoyed Michael Jackson: This is It. I'm not a huge MJ fan, but I like behind the scenes and dance stuff.  I'm assuming you've seen March of the Penguins.

  • Man on Wire

    SuperHigh Me

The Business of Being Born (even if you don't care about babies, you can see a naked RIcki Lake give birth in a bathtub)

    Trouble the Water

  • Oh yeah, I do have Life After Tomorrow queued. There's one about meth with Val Kilmer (huh?) but it only has 2 stars. Hmmm...

Thanks, BBQ! I'll check it out.

  • I just added The Mormon Proposition to our queue and I want to watch The Lottery. I also have Mark Twain, Harlan County USA, and Howard Zinn in my queue.

Of things I have watched - the Frontline "The Medicated Child" is really good (and upsetting), and I'm a big fan of the National Parks series so far (I've only watched the first two, and I'm a big National Parks nerd). I'm blanking on other things I've watched.

You already saw the beer one, right?

So in King of Kong, in the video the protagonist sent in, where his son is all, "Please come play with me and stop playing your game in the basement all the time?" I thought that was kind of upsetting. I think I was supposed to think it was funny.

  • I have never seen March of the Penguins, believe it or not.

    Super High Me was hilarious.

  • I also remember enjoying Word Wars, which is about four players involved in competition scrabble.

And if you have any interest in the business of advertising, Art & Copy is great.

    Yup, Beer Wars was great!

Was that the scene when the kid was like "DADDY I NEED TO POOOOOOO!!!!"? But he was going to beat the record!!!! Oh, nerds. That Billy Martin guy was like the biggest assshole I've ever seen.

  • I've seen and recommend:  Man On Wire, Bigger Stronger Faster, Maxed Out

It's only on DVD, but I saw Good Hair on HBO the other day and it was great.  Same with Google Baby.

Would like to see: Pagent, King Korn, King of Kong,  I.O.U.S.A, In Debt We Trust

Ha! I just sent the "Cropsey" link to Moo. I *think* I've seen "Capturing the Friedmans". Have you seen "Deliver Us From Evil"? Ugh, I had to shut that one off. Awful.

I've had the DVD of Paradise Lost 1 for like 2 months, haha. I keep forgetting to mail it!

  • Edith reminds me that the best documentary of all time is now streaming on Netflix.  Have you seen Grey Gardens?  If not, drop whatever you're doing and go watch it.  And then we'll sing Tea for Two.

  • I did not like Good Hair.  It seemed to me to imply that the expectation of looking a certain way was unique to the black female experience.  Replace smooth, long hair with a size 2 body.  The issues of mainstream beauty and the pressure to look a certain way is far more broad than just black women's hair.

Then there was the insinuation that the people making all the profit were white, when it used to be mostly AA-owned businesses.  Well, white Asians (huh?).  Aside from calling a completely separate minority "white," those African American company owners voluntarily sold their businesses.  And presumably made money off of it.  I just didn't get the, "It's a shame that black people don't own any weave companies" argument.  So should people go out and start their own weave businesses for the good of the community?  Even if no one wants to?  And if the hair is being harvested from India and other Asian countries, doesn't it make sense that Asians sell it???

I can only imagine what a pain in the ass very curly, oil-free hair is like.  I have wavy hair and I have to put a ton of curl enhancer in it, spend an hour straightening it, or wear a pony tail.  But I don't think black women with natural hair look bad.  Maybe it's because I'm just a white girl, but I thought the woman with the longish curly hair looked great.

Lastly, I didn't get the insinuation that men are supposed to pay for the hair salon visits.  It seemed like the implication was, even if you're just dating, a woman expects her partner to finance her weave.  Even if you are married, why is it thought of as the guy paying for it??  Don't most grown adults pay for their own hair styling?
