Obama's Speech

I'm a HUGE follower of Canadian politics, and I also try hard to follow/understand American politics.  Naturally, I watched Obama's speech tonight at the Tuscon memorial.  As always, Obama brought tears to my eyes.

I found the tone a bit strange though.  I understand cheering for the heroes in the crowd, but there was a lot of cheering at things Obama said, or when he began.

Did anyone else watch? What did you think? Am I just an oversensitive Canadian, or did you also find the tone a bit strange?

Re: Obama's Speech

  • I thought the exact same thing.  It seemed more like a pep raley than a memorial.

  • I found it odd too but I find most of the times he talks strange..not a fan but whatever

  • The bits I heard on the radio this morning sounded a bit like a political rally.  Hard to say though from the part I heard whether it was his speech making it seem that way or the crowd causing it to seem that way.

  • I didn't watch; I was actually very annoyed it was interrupting the show I was watching lol.  I do; however, love the way he speaks, it gets me pumped, but that's not exactly the tone you'd want for a memorial service.

  • I thought the tone of the crowd was completely inappropriate for the solemn nature of the event. But it was held in a university and I think many of those in attendance were younger college students there to see the president rather than mourners at a memorial service. And I don't think it was Obama's fault; there were stirring moments in the speech but I didn't understand the screaming like "woo-hoo"ing and such. But that's what you get when it's a more public memorial in a university stadium as opposed to a funeral in a church setting (I'm thinking most recently of Ted Kennedy's.)
