Are you off Monday?

Apparently Monday is a holiday. I thought MLK day was always on Jan 15th. Apparently not, or it's just being observed on Monday.

I don't think in the 10 years i've been working I've ever been off on MLK day. The Dr told me it's a holiday and I could take it off, uhm okay. I told him we have patients that day. He said okay, well you can come late, and leave early.

Then he just called me back and said he has a case that day @ 230 so I need to reschedule those patients.. so it looks like I may be off on Monday. yay.

That is more what Im used to. The Dr I used to work for would have had us there on Christmas if he didn't think we'd raise hell about it.

  • MLK's birthday is January 15th (probably why that day sticks out to you), but MLK Day is always observed on the 3rd Monday in January.  It is a really big day for community service and most towns and cities have projects organized to honor MLK's commitment to civic engagement and grassroots, community involvement.  That's really great that you get the day off- even if it's the first time!
  • Nope - working.

  • I'm off, and for Presidents Day next month too! Big Smile

  • This!

In my hometown Miami, its a really big holiday for AA. We put a lot of emphasis the week leading up to and the monday that his bday is observed. His bday is the 15th but always observed on the 3rd Monday. It's not a holiday that my job recognizes, but sometimes I wish they did. Mainly, because AA owe a lot of our rights and freedoms to MLK and the Civil Rights Movement.

I think our whole country owes a lot to MLK's message.  I suppose that's why we celebrate him.  It would be great if we could draw on the inspiration of his teachings right now in our national discourse.  We need the kind of uniting and inspiring words he so eloquently provided in his short life.

  • I am off! Yipee, not sure what I am going to do that day but all I gotta say is it better warm up. I am over the cold weather.

  • Yeah, I am off.....haha.

But MLK Day isn't a big deal here in South Texas at all.  AA only make up 2% of the population here.

Have you ever heard of the holiday of Juneteenth?  I am slightly embarrassed to say I never heard of Juneteenth until a few years ago.

Oh wait, my H just told me this is only a Texas holiday........which would make sense as to why I never heard of it until a few years ago.......
