Help me choose a gyno

So, here's the deal: I've always just seen my PCP for my annual appts, but now that DH and I are close to TTC, I've realized that she's pretty clueless when it comes to that kind of stuff. Because we are close to TTC, I want to see a gyno that delivers at either Baptist Downtown or Baptist South, so that I don't have to change when I do get pregnant. I think that after researching and looking back at prior posts on this subject, I have narrowed it down to either North FL OBGYN at Baptist Downtown (Barnes, Boyd, McIntyre, etc) and North FL OBGYN at Baptist South (VanBennekom, Connor, etc).

Do you go to either one of these? Have you heard anything about either one of them? Anything else you think I should consider?

TIA!

Re: Help me choose a gyno

  • I used to go to Dr. Martin Garcia at Baptist downtown before I moved and I plan on going back. My mom has also gone to him for 20+ years and he has delivered three of her kids. I would highly recommend him.

  • I don't know if you eliminated her already but Dr. Mitzi Brock from Sekine, Rasner, and Brock is awesome and they are affiliated with Baptist Downtown and Baptist South (at least according to their website). I've been seeing her for 9 years and my mom and sisters see her as well. I'm pretty sure other women on this board said they liked her too but I'm not positive. I highly recommend her if you didn't eliminate her for cause already.

  • I've heard a lot of good things about VanBennekom's group.

I have been going to Dr. Brock too and love her. I don't know where she delivers, but if lucky is right, than she is a good choice!

  • I'm with NFL ob/gyn at Baptist Downtown (Banes, Boyd, McIntyre, Foutz) and I've had great experiences with them so far. I didn't talk about it much on here, but I've been extremely sick with this pregnancy, and they have been wonderful. I was at the point where I was vomiting everything, water included, and they immediately called in Zofran for me. Then when my insurance wouldn't cover Zofran for 30 days (only 21...idk why) they called in a sub and called to check up on me.

Dr. Foutz is new to the practice, she's about 30 and that's who I had for my 1st u/s appt. She was really nice, helpful, and answered all my questions - and there have been many with how ill I've been. I do wish they were at Baptist South just because parking is easier and it's newer, but we're about equi-distance from both places so it's not a huge problem. I just hope I don't go into labor during rush hour :)

I went/go to VanBennekom's group et al...in fact he ended up delivering James.  I liked all the doctors in the group and have been very happy with them.  I credit VanBennekom and his time and efforts during my labor of the like I've heard other docs haven't given to me being able to deliver James the way I did...even if it was almost 3 hours of pushing.

I was considering them and I have heard really good things about Dr. Brock but not great things about Dr. Sekine and since whoever is on call would be the dr delivering, I wasn't sure I wanted to deal with that.

I don't know if gender is an issue for you, but I have a friend who's whole familey adores Rasner.

They're pretty much the exact same distance from our house too, which is why I don't care which one I go to. That sucks you've been so sick, but good that you have good doctors! My mom works at Baptist Downtown and has said that Dr. Barnes is really good.

Really? That's interesting to hear about Dr. Sekine. I'll have to remember that in the future. My friend's mom worked with him as an L & D nurse for years and said the whole practice was great but that's coming from the perspective of a nurse and not the patient.

  • I'm with N FL at Baptist South (Van Bennekom group) and I love them! I briefly switched to another practice and immediately switched back.

  • I have used N.FL downtown since 2004. McIntyre delivered Luke. They were wonderful during pregnancy. I had to go in to L&D on a saturday for a NST and Dr. Boyd meet us at the registration desk at 7am. Most physicians would have just had the nurse call with the results.

I really like that they are able to do everything in their office, including ultrasounds.

  • Thanks ladies! Sounds like they are both good practices, so I guess I'll just have to decide whether I'd rather go to Downtown or South.

  • I just switched from NFL at St. Vincent's to NFL at Baptist Downtown (Barnes, et al.), based on great reviews from a couple friends.  I haven't had my appointment yet, but I'm glad you asked this question because now I feel even better about it.

  • Also, with N FL Downtown, they have a satellite office in Mandarin across from the library just south of 295, so you can go there for basic office visits. All the u/s appts. have to be at the downtown office, but it is much more convenient for me to do the annuals and non-u/s visits at the small office in Mandarin.

  • I go to the NFL Baptist South office (although they have two other satellite offices, one on Baymeadows and 9A and the other off San Jose in Mandarin).  My main dr is Dr. Greenwald, but I've seen all drs and NP.  I love this grouof doctors!  The sonographer is quite funny and amusing!  :)  Dr VanBennekom was actually the one that saw me when I had to go into L&D due to my water leaking.  They had to transfer me to Baptist downtown and Dr. McIntyre delivered my DS.  She was really great!  I remember her being very personable even in the delivery room.
  • I also use the North Florida OB/GYN group at Baptist South.  Dr. Greenhaw delivered B and Dr. VanBennekom is who I saw while dealing with the miscarriage.  I love all of the doctors there and they have been super supportive.  I also really liked Baptist South.  I've been to Baptist Downtown and it's nice too, not as new and the rooms aren't as nice, but definitely not bad at all.
