How to wash a gasoline soaked bag?

DH (military) came home with a bag soaked in gasoline. He wants to just throw it in the washing machine, but I think this surely isn't a good idea. Gut feeling, I guess? The way it reeks, I'm afraid we'd never get rid of the smell in the machine.

If I'm wrong, no problem. If we shouldn't wash it in the machine, any other suggestions? Unfortunately, it's military issued so I don't think throwing it out is a viable option.

Re: How to wash a gasoline soaked bag?

  • Let it sit out in the sun for a day or two and then soak it overnight in a tub of water and a crap load of Orange Glo cleaner (or any of those other orange cleaners).  Throw it in the washer after you sun it and soak it and run the load through with about a cup of the orange cleaner instead of detergent.

If you have the smell left in your washer afterwards you can run a few empty loads through with the orange cleaner and it should take care of it.

  • Ditto on not wanting to put it in the washing machine.  I guess it's not the best season for this, but I'd hose it down in the driveway before washing it.
  • FYI- most machines, washers and dryers, have care/use instructions. My washer has a chart on the inside of the lid that states you should NEVER wash anything soaked in gas, grease, or oil. I'm guessing there is concern for a fire? Friction, electricity, water, and fuel? No thanks. Good instincts OP! What kind of bag is it? If it was under $50, I'd toss it.
  • Do you have a top loading washer?  If so, toss the bag in and dump a can of Coca-Cola in there with it.  Works like a charm!

My DH does aircraft maintenance and will occasionally come home reeking of fuel.  This trick used to work for us when we had a top loader.  I haven't had the guts to try it in our front loading, but I'm sure it works exactly the same.
