recipes...

How do you organize them?  I've got recipes EVERYWHERE and can never find what I'm looking for.

Re: recipes...

  • For recipes that are tried and true, I copy them on to a 4x6 index card and store them in a photo album by category.  I actually have 5 albums -- Beef & Pork; Poultry & Seafood; Salads, Soups & Sides; Brunch & Breads; Desserts & Snacks.   The Dessert album is overflowing and the salad album is nearly empty.  Stick out tongue

There are a couple of recipes that I make regularly from cookbooks that are really long and I didn't feel like re-copying them so I put a post-it flag on the cookbook page.

For recipes that I tear from magazines or print off the internet: if I'm going to make it ASAP I'll stick it on the fridge door so it doesn't lost.  If I don't have any immediate plans for it, I toss it in a pile.  Periodically I realize that I have way too many saved recipes and I'll pull out a few and toss the rest because I figure I'll have a big pile again soon anyway!  Maybe this isn't the best method.  LOL!

  • I organize magazine recipes in an accordion folder.  Every magazine I've subscribed to gets a sleeve (or two) and I staple recipes from an issue together in a packet.  At the front of the packet goes issue's recipe index, where I've checked off what I kept.  I usually only get a year or two of a magazine and then switch to another subscription so this method works pretty well, except for Bon Appetit, which I get every year.  For this, I use three-ring binders and sheet protectors.  I keep the indices at the front, so I can quickly figure out what months and recipes are in each binder.

Overall, this system works well but I have so many recipes that I forget about recipes I've made and we've loved.  This weekend I hope to sit down and create a spreadsheet with all our favorite recipes and where they came from.  I'll probably cross-reference by chicken, vegetarian, etc.

  • Oh, and two of the sleeves in my accordion file are devoted to 1) blog recipes and 2) recipes from family and friends.
  • I keep word files on my computer.  One is for main dishes, another for sides and yet another for dessert items.

I also have a few recipes floating around in the kitchen somewhere.

  • I have an old-fashioned recipe box with dividers that have breakouts like "poultry," "desserts," "salads," etc.
