I'm going to try cutting dairy out of my diet and see if it helps with Abe's fussiness and gas. Two questions for you:

1. Did you do soy products? I feel like you did. Mostly I will miss milk.

2. Did you/Nolan have an issue with nuts? The pedi mentioned that Abe may be sensitive to nuts. Yesterday I ate peanutbutter and he had some bad spit up bouts after that.

So I think I am out dairy and nuts. Awesome.

Re: **Annie**

  • Oh dear!  Not another one lost to the world of no-dairy!!!  I just wrote another friend about this.  Remember, it will take 2 weeks for the dairy to leave your system so you won't see much of a difference until then.

Yes, I had soy.  Soy milk, some soy cheeses, soy ice cream, etc.  And remember I ate a LOT of goat cheese!   Rice milk products are great too - they make a great parm cheese and shredded mozzarella.  I did not like the vegan cheese.  Yuck.  There's a delicious Coconut milk ice cream, too!  So silky.  I still get it.  I used the Silk creamer in my coffee, too.  I was okay not having regular milk.  I liked the soy.  I never tried any of the almond milk though have heard great things.

I did not have issues with nuts.  I ate peanut butter every day of my pregnancy and was able to enjoy after as well without any problems.  It could've just been coincidence.  Maybe cut out both for 2 weeks, then try the nuts again to see what happens.  If he has reflux, he's going to spit up no matter what.  It's just that cutting out the dairy reduces the acidity.

Sorry to hear about this, Brianne!   :(   It's not fun, but it's not forever!  Hope to see you soon!  miss you and the little guy.

  • I'm driving myself insane. I'm overanalyzing everything. Every whimper. Every spit up. I'm wondering...is it gas? Is it reflux? What did I just eat?

I'm still not convinced that he has reflux. A lot of the time he spits up happily. But once in a while he will fuss fuss fuss and then spit up.

I just want him to feel good and be happy. So I can be happy!!

  • *butting in* (so feel free to ignore)

Doing our Maternity-Neonatal rotation right now, so this is fresh in my mind-- some babies spit up all the time, while others don't. Vomiting is another story, but spitting up *can* be normal and okay.

Re: nuts and dairy. My sister had to do this for 2 years, I believe, because my nephew is WICKED allergic to dairy, nuts, etc. (she couldn't even have goat's milk).  My sister is the type to research EVERYTHING and to double-check the doctors and go on boards for reviews of products, etc. She has the best pediatric allergist in Maine (although I think there are only 2 or 3 in the entire state to begin with). I am happy to hook you up with her (via email, most likely) if you have any questions. I DO know that the milk allergy (versus lactose intolerance) is often associated with eczema-- Ryan had horrible eczema until they took him off dairy. Anyhow, if you want, my sister is a good resource.

Just throwing it out there.  Good luck! I will go nuts (pun intended) if I have to give up dairy for my baby, so I am sending you good juju that it's not a dairy issue!

  • *from the lactose  and soy allergic one*

I love love love coconut milk and would recommend coconut and almond milk 100%.  Also, you should be okay with items that have milk products which are cooked-  less than 8 oz in a cake, cookie etc.  Watch out for cheese and creams, they are the hardest to digest.

Most recipes which call for cows milk can be replaced with soy, coconut, etc.  I've noticed that the cook time is a bit different, so you need to get used to it.
