I need your design help! Desperately!
DH & I are having our kitchen gutted 4 weeks after babys arrival (yes, I'm insane I know).
We have to pick out flooring, cabinets, fixtures, counters, etc.
What item should I pick first do you think? I think we want to go with a darker cabinet. Do you think I should pick a cabinet first or find one of the elements that I fall in love with and then revolve everything around that? Do you have any sites that you would recommend for helping me get through this design project?
Re: Kristen!
Wow, you're brave! hahaha
Are you replacing the flooring in just the kitchen or will the new flooring go into other spaces as well? When I was a kitchen/bath designer 4 years ago, I would typically start with the cabinets, then the flooring and countertops. These items can hit the budget the hardest and they are the largest items visually, so they're usually a smart starting point. Since you know you want a certain color cabinet, you probably want to start there. Also, the style of the cabinet door you pick will have an influence on your other selections. If your flooring is going into other spaces, you would want to consider that first or second as well. Any idea what type of flooring you want to use? I would then work on the countertops (you have lots of options, so it's usually pretty easy to find something that works with your design and fits the budget). After that, select the cabinet hardware, appliances, and paint color.
I would check out some different cabinet companies websites - they will have lots of pictures and designs of kitchens for you to look at and you can peruse the different cabinet doors while you're there.
Do you know who you're using? Are you going to go to a kitchen design or cabinet store or somewhere like Lowes or Home Depot? If you are planning on using Lowe's or Home Depot, I would go to an actual cabinet place first and get a quote and design drawn up - they do this for free and you will get a much better layout. My parents used Lowe's before I got into kitchen design and they're kitchen drives me nuts now because they have cabinet doors swinging the wrong way! Of course, if you need me to look at any plans, I would be more than happy to!
Happy designing
Thanks so much for your input!
The flooring is just going to be in the kitchen & dining room (we have a combo area).
I know for sure I don't want to go with anything "too" trendy, since we are dropping quite a bit of money into the kitchen. Our kitchen is really horrible right now and we are gutting down to the studs. The two companies we are between hiring will both do designs for us. We opted out of going to a Lowes/Home Depot because I've heard their cabinets aren't as high quality as the local stores you can go to.
I may need to take up your offer on help once we get the final plans to see if you would change anything:)
