Lindsay - Are you able to IM

If not, I read your JD and skimmed the examples. Mind if I ask you a couple non-identifying questions here?

Re: Lindsay - Are you able to IM

  • No IM at work.  Can IM on phone but it's annoying.  Feel free to ask here.

  • So I read your JD and notes.

How much of what you do is the actual substantive work (in the subject matter) vs keeping tabs on the work and projects, communicating status to stakeholders and interested parties, and raising flags if something starts going-to-***?

Do you think you could do your job without direct reports? In my scenario noone would report to me (we have a lot of individual contributors and dotted lines. crazy matrixed).

Do you think there is value for this kind of role for a group that is already very communications focused and skilled? If so, how would you imagine the role being different?

The group I might do this for is very very small. Very. Would that concern you?

At the end of the day, are you a den mother herding cats?

Do you think you could do your job without direct reports? In my scenario noone would report to me (we have a lot of individual contributors and dotted lines. crazy matrixed).  Yes.  Those other JDs I included - none of those have DRs.  My team produces a lot of analytical reporting and forecasting that only a centralized team could do.  In absence of that, I could totally do it solo.

Do you think there is value for this kind of role for a group that is already very communications focused and skilled? If so, how would you imagine the role being different?  Yes, b/c its not just about internal comms, but comm'ing and diplomat (of sorts) to external groups.  Value is in the cross functional/cross department stuff.  I also get called into a lot of boss's boss and boss's boss's boss stuff, as well as working with our counterpart orgs in other business units.

The group I might do this for is very very small. Very. Would that concern you?  As long as the person you are working for is fairly senior in the org and well respected, nope.

At the end of the day, are you a den mother herding cats?  There is definitely a lot of that!!

  • Thanks. I really appreciate your thoughts on this. I worry a little that I have ZERO experience in the subject matter for this group and the group hired a policy gal without thinking it through and they aren't utilizing her as well as they should.

That being said, the group also took on some dotted line reports in all of our regions that they've never had before and aren't sure what to do with, so I might be able to be of some help there.
