To come off the pill or not to...

I have been on the pill for a year and half and have never liked it. Two brands, low sex drive, hundreds of tears and many spotting issues have led me to think that it's just not worth it anymore, and I am completely comfortable with condoms.

I am going on vacation at the end of February to the Caribbean. I am suppose to get my period this Sunday... should I wait to come off it after my trip? It will be about 6 weeks away from my trip if I stop now... is that enough time? I am spotting every month anyway... so I am expecting to deal with some issues while away.

I know every body is different, but I am completely clueless and having a hard time deciding if now is the right time or not!

Re: To come off the pill or not to...

  • I would talk to your doctor, there are other kinds of pills or other forms of BC's she could recommend.  There are so many on the market those two just might not be the ones.  With these kinda of things all the doctor can do is have you try, wait and see how the register with your body.  I recall for a while the 3rd one I tried worked great for a while until I a little older, after trying 9 different i gave up and went with an IUD.

  • The spotting might be because the hormone levels are not strong enough for you, at least that's what I've read when researching for myself. Emotionally though, if you feel terrible on that pill, then it's not a good fit for you.

If you're fine with condoms then you could just do that, but PP mentioned talking to your doctor about other options which I think is a great idea. Unless you're just sick of hormonal BC in general, there are always other pills (I took Yaz first and HATED it, but then did well with Loestrin/Junel) the Nuva Ring, Implanon, the Depo shot or an IUD.

     Good luck with everything.

  • I'd talk to my doctor about switching again. I tried quite a few pills to find one that a) I wasn't allergic too, and b) didn't make me spot all the time. Explain to her what you're looking for, if the pill isn't right for you she can suggest an alternative.
  • I hear ya girl! I wrestled with this decision for a while, too. I took my last BCP 3 days ago. I expect my body to force a period any day now...I say if you're cool with condoms and you're used to spotting, just stop the pills. If you can stop at the end of the pack, then your chance of an unexpected period go way down. Have you read TCOYF? I'm going to start charting and using this method in a month.
  • Are you skipping the placebo week ever? If youre on a triphasic pill, I'd try a mono phasic one too see if that stops the spotting

  • BC was never my first choice because I felt like I was messing too much with mother nature. Thought I would try and be more responsible but its just gotten me frustrated.

I am fine emotionally.... except the spotting gets to me. It sometimes starts in week 2 or 3 of my pack.... so some months, I have only had a 1 free week of wearing tampons/pads!

I was on Loestrin and switch to Ortho Tri Cyclen. I don't care for the nuvaring or anything like that. I do prefer to take a pill. I did talk to my doctor the last time I was there. She did discuss that the hormone level could be off, so she did prescribe something for me to take in addition to the pill the next time the spotting started. That just made things worse.

I don't skip the placebo pills, but on a occasion may have missed one here or there.

I feel like I will hate myself if I stop it now and then end up with a full on period on my vacation, but like I said, I expect to be dealing with some sort of issue while I'm there anyway. Just don't know when the timing is right. Prior to going on the pill, my body worked like clockwork, so hopefully it will bounce back!

  • I was having a similar problem, and I decided to go off my pill for a while. When I started the pill back, I began all my crazies back as well- crying and what not.

I would talk to your doctor to see what is the best for you. My doctor suggested Mirena because it releases a low dose of hormone...but your doctor may know better for you! Hope you find a solution.
