Want to recommend your car?
Hey Ladies--this is a follow up to the good morning post. My car is on its last legs. For those with a great memory, I had asked several months ago what you all thought of our predicament....and unfortunately we're going to have to keep DH's crap of a Chevy Prism because my Civic is just a money pit right now.
It has treated me well to this point though (171,000+ miles). We're still looking at (used) Outbacks, but the gas mileage isn't great for them.
Can anyone recommend their cars, and give me approximate gas mileage and whether or not you'd consider another one or not. Reliability is big for me too. TIA!
Re: Want to recommend your car?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Toyota Matrix. It has been super reliable and is pretty good on gas mileage (I'm not sure about the specifics). I love that it is a littler car, but that you can easily fit 4 adults in it (5 if you squeeze a bit) and you can cart around tons of stuff. The back seat folds down completely flat (in two segments) and the front passenger seat even folds down. When everything is folded down they create a hard plastic floor, which lets you cart around messier things without worrying about messing up upholstery or carpet. I'm at 110k miles and would buy another one tomorrow if something happened to mine, heaven forbid. Definitely check them out!
And if you like it, you should also look at the Pontiac Vibe. They are basically the same car since there was some joint venture type thing going on when they were built. We just preferred to stay with Toyota since we bought ours as a Certified Used Toyota and then purchased the extended warranty. Just a note on this, if you go this route you can buy the extended warranty from any Toyota dealership. So DH got a really low quote from one in Minnesota and made our local dealership match it, or otherwise we'd buy from this other guy. We have only used it to replace our cruise control, but that paid for it so it was a good purchase for us!
ETA: Because I know you like your bikes, when you fold down the back seats, you can put two bikes (or maybe three) in the car if you take of the front wheels and have one of those clippy things that you attached to a board to click in the front wheel part. I hope you know what I mean because clearly I don't know the technical words, but if you don't I'll find some pictures to explain. You can also obviously use a bike rack as well, but sometimes this is just simpler.
We LOVE LOVE LOVE our 06 subabru legacy. It is great on gas (get about 35 on open highway and 26ish in the city). We also have a 2010 Ford F150. Although it is huge, it is still decent on gas (16ish in city and 22ish on highway).
I will say that this winter has really proven to us why we bought a subabru. It has been AWESOME in the weather. No problems whatsoever. It does better in the snow and ice than our truck! Also, the legacy is almost 5 years old and we haven't had the first problem or complaint.
I definitely know what you mean!! And thanks for this extra tidbit. I've already talked to the local Toyota dealership (Ironically/helpfully, it's located literally right next to the Rail Trail DH uses to bike to work everyday) and DH and I are planning on heading over there on Saturday. I had talked to a salesperson about the Prius (mostly for gas economy), but she has a used Outback on her lot, but now I may see if she has any used Matrix's too. I think the new ones are a little out of our price range. Thanks Girls!!
I love my 06 Civic. 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. The floor of the backseat is flat, so we can haul some large items if need be (people are amazed at what we can fit in the back seat area).
Yup--my '00 has amazing trunk space too. I do love my civic for that reason--for a little car it really does have a LOT of space.
We love our Mazda 3. We have the 5 door version, which is shaped like the Toyota Matrix (4 doors + hatchback). It gets great gas mileage, around 35 mpg I think, and the rear hatchback lets you haul tons of stuff. If you lay the back seats flat, it fits a LOT. It has been an incredibly reliable car, ours is an '04, and I can't actually think of anything we've had to do to it other than usual maintenance type stuff.
GL with your search!
Thank you. Do you have any idea where Mazda's are made? I'm really looking for a car that's been made (mostly) in America, if possible. I couldn't tell from the website...I know their USA HQ is in California, but couldn't find ANYTHING about any domestic plants.
I love my 2009 Rav-4.
When my Sentra crapped out and I found out I was pregnant, we looked at CRV's and Rav-4's.
I love my car. It handles well, gets pretty good MPG (I fill up about once every 12 days) and it doesn't have a huge gas tank (I think its about a 12 gallon tank).
I'm pretty sure Mazda is Japanese, but I think they are also at least partly owned by Ford, so I'm not sure where they are made?
