Ughhh! Our freezer was unplugged! Do we have to throw everything out?
So, we have a deep freeze in our pantry that we stocked full of food on Sunday. Monday morning we had a cable company come and hook up our cable. Before he got started he had to find a certain type of outlet or plug in and we couldn't find it, but I know he did a fair bit of looking in our pantry. Just now, 4 days later, DH goes into the freezer and discovers it is off! I suspect maybe the cable guy accidentally unplugged it when he was looking around in there, so we're assuming it's been off since Monday am. Is any of the food good still, or should we throw it all out? There are chicken breasts, breaded chicken fingers, toaster waffles, and frozen pizza (with chicken). I suspect I know the answer, but it just seems like SUCH a waste of $! I'm so annoyed, but what do you think?

Is the food still frozen?
if it's thawed (or never froze at all) I wouldn't risk it.
I would say anything with meat in it is probably bad if it is thawed.
You said you have waffles and things in there I have thawed and refrozen waffles with no problems so I would think that would be OK.
Go through your food, see if any of it is still frozen/cold and if any can be saved.

If it was totally or even partially thawed, I would toss it.
If it were thawed, throw it out. If it is partially thawed, you could cook it all and then freeze it again. It will be a bit of a hassel to cook it all, but it won't go in the trash and it will save you time cooking later!
As a side note, if the cable guy unplugged it then you could always try calling your cable company to complain. They won't cover the cost of the food, but they may give you a discount or free cable for a little bit, which should help offset the cost of new groceries. If the first person you get says they can't do anything, very calmly ask for a supervisor.
Yeah, I think I'll call tomorrow and see what they say. DH took a picture of the things in the deep freezer that we had to throw out (a lot). We'll see if they'll do anything. I mean, I dont know for sure that it was him, but I don't know how else it happened.
