CDS

anyone who has been through the process want to explain it to me from a parents' perspective?  How long?  Paperwork? visits?  Tell me what I am going to be going through.... we were just referred for a speech eval... and now have a case manager and a whole pile of paperwork coming to us in the mail to fill out!

Re: CDS

  • It's not that difficult.  It might take a few weeks for them to set up the evaulation appointment.  Two or three people will come to your house and evaluate the boys.  They'll write up a report and let you know if you qualify for services.  If you qualify for speech therapy, they'll assign you a speech-language pathologist who will come to your home and do therapy sessions.

Kimberly described it well.  We used to contract with them until last summer, but stopped because it is a really broken system in Maine.  Now the majority of my caseload comes to me for speech in addition to or instead of CDS for a variety of reasons through INS.   If you need anything...let me know!

  • Since Kimberly already told you what you need from the parent perspective I'll feel free to chime in from the referral perspective.

It's great that they sent you paper work, getting them to take my referral and do something with it was the hardest part. Once they did the evaluation and observation things went smoothy. They used to come to the center to do the observation too, so ask if it can be during the day when he is most alert and cooperative.

The only other issue I had with CDS was that they never sent the center a copy of the IFSP so we never knew was was required by law for modifications.

Your boys go to their grandmother's house for care right? If they need speech and should start going to a center we had all therapists come right to daycare so parents wouldn't have to drive children to appointments in the middle of the day or have to have therapy at night when everyone is tired and cranky.
