What happened to wedding etiquette?

My cousin is getting married in May.  I got a STD in the mail with a website address, stuck it on the fridge and didn't think much about it.  Today, I got an email from my uncle (cousin's father) asking me to RSVP to their wedding on the website.  Hum.  It's in MAY!  Aside from the fact that I know I won't be able to travel at that time, it's .... early.  Right?  It feels very pushy and kind of rude.

I went to their site and this was on the homepage:

Also another change in wedding traditions is the registry. Although I love choosing the perfect matching plates with smaller plates and then those other smaller plates that no one knows there use but still MUST have them, we are going to forgo that option especially since our mini-me cabinets only fit like 3 plates each! ... If you insist on giving gifts (you won't have to insist very hard) we will have some fun envelopes at the actual wedding where you can slip some cash/check into which will go to specific thing, i.e. house, car, honeymoon, or puppies (that one will be hidden from K so shhhh). We would love everyone to bring a card though just so if we get too drunk we know who was there. Just kidding...but seriously bring a card."

Hum.  I know they are not traditional people, but... blatantly asking for a check instead of a gift?!  DH's friends all knew we would love a little extra $ to take along on our HM, but never once did we say anything.

  • Wow, that was a bit rude, and then a bit more rude. RSVP to my May wedding when all they have sent out is a save the date? I hope he meant that they preferred an online RSVP once the invitations roll out and not go RSVP now.

Then give us money because we don't want your gift combined with telling their guests to bring a card..more than once. TACKY!

  • That is super tacky.  And kind of just bizzare.  So are there no real invitations?  Are they only sending invitations to people who RSVP online to the STDs?  I don't really understand to whole concept of that they are doing.

And who just asks for money?  That is VERY rude.

On the upside they're looking forward to a rockin' good party they might not even remember...

  • Oh, wow!  I feel so bad for any matriarch figures (such as grandmothers -- egads!) watching this event unfold!

  • That's when I'm spiteful and would go out and buy two "matching" sets of dishes with a note "I know you didn't want them but I thought they'd be fun for "special" nights".  No way in hell I'd  give money when ASKED.  I'm in NYC and its common place to give money over an actual physical gift at a wedding, but that doesn't mean its ASKED for.  And I'd wait till the last possible moment to RSVP too.
