Homemade laundry soap question

I recently made my first batch of homemade powdered laundry soap with Fels Naptha, wasing soda, borax and baking soda. The soap doesn't dissolve well though so I've been giving it all a shake for a few minutes in a jar of boiling water before adding it to the washer. This works reasonably well but is a PITA.

The powdered recipes appealed to me because they take up less space than the liquid recipes and, at least initially, seemed easy to use.

I am wondering if a hybrid could be done. Could I mix and store the dry ingredients and add as usual and then just add a little store bought liquid soap to the washer? If so, what kind of liquid soap; could I just use dish soap?

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Homemade laundry soap question

  • If you have a food processor, you can use that on the soap to get smaller pieces which dissolve more quickly.  Also, the action of the clothing rubbing together will tend to help the soap dissolve.  Unless you are finding undissolved bits of soap in your clean laundry, I would not assume it isn't getting dissolved.
  • I did use a food processor and I did get undissolved bits left on my clothes. I made up a batch of the version the the first poster to answer used and I think (fingers crossed) that it will work well and still be super convenient. I want it to be super easy because if DH or DS ever have to do laundry they will not mess around with extra steps. Thanks to everyone who responded!
