What would you buy?

We just bought a larger house that has mostly wood floors, with some carpeting (basement, stair runner, a few area rugs), and some tile (kitchen, baths, and entryway).

We had central vac in our old house, so we don't own a vacuum.  I only have a swiffer as far as mopping.

What would you buy?  We aren't looking to spend a fortune, as we are currently carrying both houses.

Would you get a vacuum that works on all surface areas?  A bare floor vacuum and a steam mop?  Etc.  Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Thank you

Re: What would you buy?

  • If you want a vacuum, definitely go with one that will do carpet/multisurface. Carpet is hard enough to keep clean and a hard floor vac would not even come close. I have a eureka clean-oh that I got from target that was relatively cheap and handles dog hair from 2 dogs easily (don't know if you have pets, but it seems that if a vacuum can handle that they can handle  most anything).

If you are wanting a steam mop and it's sealed real hardwood then I would definitely recommend one. I just got a Haan multipurpose steam cleaner and love it. I just ran a dry swiffer before to get big things and dog hair and let the steam mop do the rest!

  • We have a scooba and are over the moon about it. It sweeps all surfaces and then mops. Just a little bit of vinegar goes a long way too. Good Luck!

  • Id get a swiffer to hold me over, its so easy to use, and the antibacterial and multipurpose solutions are safe for wood and tile.

This is very good advice.  Personally, I would get a vacuum to use on the carpet but one that works on all surfaces.  If you can swing it, I'd also get the steam mop but if you can only do one or the other, I would get the vacuum to start with.

  • I have a vacuum for all floors that I love on the carpet, but hate on the tile.  Because of that, I just bought the shark vac and steam which I love.
