"grown up" furniture

My mom has been harping me for years that I need to get a "grown up" bedroom set. We don't have a headboard, and we have one true dresser that is more suitable for a kids room. DH uses one of those clear, plastic drawer things for his shirts and socks, and we have a smaller one of these things as a night stand.

We finally broke down and went shopping yesterday. I figured if we didn't do it before the baby came, then it would be a very long time before we could purchase a set after baby is here. Whether that's really true or not, I'm not sure but it sounded convincing enough for me. Here's the set we're getting:

It's a set from Ashley. We're getting everything except the mirror on top of the dresser. We have a full length mirror on the back of the door so I didn't see any point in spending $200 on a mirror. I was really impressed with the store we went to, which sells higher end stuff. After looking at what they had, I told the salesman that we were looking to spend about $1K less than everything in their show room. So he whipped out some books that they can order from and we found this set. I know he was just looking for the sale, but I liked that he didn't blow us off because we couldn't spend $2K+ for our set. I'm so excited for it to come!

Anyone else still using their college mix and match furniture?

Re: "grown up" furniture

  • Very nice!

We are using a combo of free stuff (from parents), and furniture that we bought with wedding money.  We don't have a headboard, but we finally got some large-ish art that we are hanging above the bed.  The furniture in our bedroom is about half and half stuff we bought together, and cheap stuff DH got when he moved into the house 3 years ago.

  • Yay!!! That looks so nice!

I always lived in campus housing in college, then lived on my own for awhile with really old hand-me-downs which were thrown out when I moved overseas. So when I got back, I went to Ikea for a bed, and garage sale for a chest of drawers and nightstand. After we got married, we bought the wardrobe and a second nightstand that go with the Ikea bed. We still use the garage sale pieces, but they are real wood (which our Ikea stuff is not) and finished to match each other, a few shades darker than the Ikea set. So it doesn't look very mix and matchy.

Our living room, on the other hand, is totally college mix and match.

  • I love it. Our bedroom set is mix and match, and really needs to be upgraded, so I know we will eventually.
  • Very nice!

Our set is the Highland Park set from Ashley:  http://www.ashleyfurniturehomestore.com/Catalog/product.aspx?group=BedroomFurniture&category=BedroomBeds&id=B235B13&spi=0&ref=search-t

We were using mix & match junk too, until mom & dad got us this set as an engagement present.

  • Congrats!

I finally went out and bought a "grown up" set two years ago. Before that I slept on a queen bed on the floor and had the same dressers from childhood, which were my father's when he was a child (beautiful antique set).

Being a salesperson is so much easier when people honestly tell you their budget and you can find something that works for them. It's actually one of the most rewarding parts of the job, it's just getting customers to trust you with their budgets.

Good idea getting it now before baby comes.

This is so true. Especially since the prices we were looking at were 50% off too, I think tried extra hard to find something in our budget. I told DH that that's where we're going for furniture from now on. Quality stuff and great service - I don't mind paying a little more for that.

  • Very nice! We had a hodge podge of furniture from college with a bed and storage cubbies from Target. We upgraded to this set when we bought our house (that's our bedding too, but we had the bedding on our wedding registry and got it before even looking at furniture - pretty funny they show it together):

  • Nice, Ali!

Our bedroom set is grown up; but one of the spares is H's college bed & dresser...that don't match. I hate it.

  • where is yours from Jackie ?

we have all " grown up furniture " we bought it when we bought the house - we bought all new furniture for the entire house since we had been in the MILs basement -- wahoo for movin up !

  • Kate, ours is from a place called Boston Interiors in New England...maybe just MA.

Of course we got it over 2 years ago and now it's a lower price. UGH. And I just read we shouldn't be using furniture polish on it. double Ugh.

  • I really like everyone's bedroom sets!

My folks upgraded me to a queen bed the summer before my senior year of high school and bought me a bedroom set to go with it. My mom always promised me that when I got a house, I could have it...so I called her on it when we moved back. So I have that. It's from Penney's, almost 7 years old by now, but I only used it for a year and then it was guest bedroom furniture after that, so it's in great shape! I won't be able to find a picture of it because of that, though.

  • we have a hodge podge. i have my dresser from my room growing up, DH now has the tall dresser that goes with the nursery furniture and his old dresser is in the closet in the nursery (the nursey is pretty small so only the crib, short dresser, rocking chair and a small book case will fit. the only room in our house that has all matching wood is the spare room because it's the rest of the pieces of my bedroom set from growing up (twin bed, dresser and desk).

    one day... ;)
