Nota, Phatkat and other runner ladies

Question about working out in the cold. Do you ever have problems with your ears?  In the past I've always been fine.  However, twice in the last month I've come in from an outdoor workout and my ear drums felt like they were being stabbed with pencils.  It was a terrible pain!  I do wear an ear warmer, but I didn't know if you had experienced this before or had any other tips.  So far, I've just curled up in the fetal position and held my hands over them until it stops.

Re: Nota, Phatkat and other runner ladies

  • I've had something I guess is similar in my hands and parts of my ears. I think it's just that they're (ears) getting too cold and then trying to warm up too fast. Kind of like a "brain freeze" when you eat ice cream - only for your ears. Too sudden of a temperature change.

I also have worried when that happens if my ears/fingers aren't getting a little too close to being frostbitten. I can see where generating heat from running would make you not realize that was happening until it was too late. I switched over from using an ear warmer to a hat that has a double layer of fleece banded right over my ears. Haven't had a problem since. Also, I tend to wear my hat around for a few minutes after I come inside, or get back in my car, and I think that slows the transition a bit.

  • I don't have troubles with fingers or toes during workouts, but I do with skiing and hiking.  I, too, have been concerned about frostbite.  Especially when I come in and they are really white.  Taking a warm bath really makes them sting, but I read that's what you're supposed to do.

Maybe I will try a hat this week instead. They start hurting before I even get inside, so I'm not sure about the gradual warm down.  I was thinking about trying cotton balls in my ears if that hat doesn't help.  Thanks for the help.

  • You know what's weird? That used to happen to me all the time, but it hasn't in at least 2 months. It was unbearable. The only thing I'm doing now that I wasn't before is wearing a full hat. I think I used to go without.

Mine used to start hurting about 15-20 minutes into a run, when I was getting my heart rate up higher.

  • Ouch!! I'm no help, I guess, because I haven't experienced it. When it's really cold, though, I wear a fleece ear warmer under a stocking cap. I'm kind of a wuss when it comes to the cold so I run with about 40 layers of everything on.

Vaseline does really and truly help keep exposed skin (nose, cheeks) from getting too cold and painful in my experience. I can't say I would advise putting Vaseline IN your ears, but it's a good cold-weather running tip in general.
