Sinkhole Coverage - Homeowners insurance

Anyone have any thoughts on sinkhole coverage?  I'm in the process of getting quotes for home insurance, and the first one came back today.  In it, the underwriter mentioned that it includes catastrophic ground cover collagpes, but doesn't cover sinkholes - that would be an additional premium.

I know virtually nothing about sinkholes (other than a billboard I see off of I4), guess I need to start googling.  Anyone have any experience with this type of coverage, and know if it's worth it?

Hm, I wonder if we have sinkhole coverage. Good question.

I know nothing about it. Sorry.

There is a rep that comes into my office and she told me she has been fighting with her homeowners insurance for 2 years to fix a sinkhole that is under their house. She said they keep sending different people out to inspect the sinkhole and arguing about who has to pay to fix it. She said it has been a huge disaster. She said there is obvious damage to her house, and about 80% of her neighborhood has sinkhole damage.. insane!

I would think that if it prevents clusters like the one this girl is going through it might be worth it, but I don't know if she already had coverage or what that whole deal is.

There are sinkhole billboards all over Spring Hill, apparently they are quite the problem around here. =/

  • I don't have any experience with sinkhole insurance, but I would definitely invest in it if I owned a house in Florida.  My BFF's brother, who lives in Safety Harbor, has been royally screwed b/c a sinkhole has wrecked the foundation and his an his neighbor's houses.  He'll never be able to resell his house and sooner or later it's going to be inhabitable.  I'm very risk averse so I'd want to protect myself from something like that happening if I lived in a state that is literally built on top of limestone deposits.
  • My H works for a homeowners insurance company - if you want to email me questions I will forward them on to him! I'm sure he could give better insight than me:)

  • I am freaked out about sinkholes and would definitely make sure you have it. We had a huge hole in the backyard but it was determined that a broken sprinkler pipe was causing it to get wet and sink it. A couple doors upstairs have to be banged shut and I have noticed cracks in the walls but H says it is just the drywall cracking because our house was built in the 80's. I don't buy it. I swear one day our house will be on the news! So, that is my advice. Make sure you are covered, just in case!!

That wouldn't happen. All settling happens within the first couple of years of moving into a new house. Is the drywall cracking like settlement or is it getting soft spots? Soft spots can be a sign of termites. The dors banging shut is probably just ghosts... nothing to worry about Stick out tongue lmbo!

  • I believe we have a rider on our homeowners for sink hole but I'll have to double check with H since we're in a sink hole prone area
