Is this fb status offensive/inappropriate? Or is it just me?

I have a very liberal friend on FB, he's a guy I knew in HS.  We have VERY different opinions on the world, but so far we have been able to coexist peacefully on FB.  Well today he posted the following and I couldn't keep my mouth shut anymore:

"I think its pretty sad that there is relatively no facebook activity celebrating King's message of equality and peace whereas last veterans day people couldn't get enough of celebrating the so-called heroism of killing people overseas."

Although he is free to have any opinion he wants obviously, I think this could be extremely offensive to many on FB...and I think it's especially inappropriate to post it today on Martin Luther King day.  I don't think that MLK would want a day in his honor to be a reason to be angry with our veterans and those who support them.  I told him, amongst other things, to make sure he thanks a veteran for being able to have such an opinion.  I'm sure this won't be the end of this discussion between me and him.  Just wondering what you all thought...

  • I'm with you, Gina.  Veterans Day isn't a day to honor "just those veterans who fought in wars that you disagree with."  It's a day to honor all those who have served....those who fought to defend the freedoms that Martin Luther King Jr believed that everyone deserves to have.  It's also a day to honor those who have served in the armed forces during times of peace...those military personnel who have never seen combat but who were (and are) ready and willing to protect our country and the people in it if/when called upon.  Veterans Day also honors those men and women who are willing to go into other countries to attempt to fight for people who are being denied the rights and freedoms that Martin Luther King Jr fought for.

  • Great points Carrie!  I just checked back on his status...he's getting torn up by a lot of people and not one of his FB friends has stood up to defend him.

  • I completely agree with you, Gina. ?It seems to me he isn't very educated on the topics he speaks of.
