I'm jealous!! That is one that I've been using for a long time.
I would start in auto mode then just start playing around with stuff. the good thing is is that you don't have to wait to see the results. There are tons of good books out there.

That's exactly what I have right now. Are you interested in using the camera the way it's meant to be used? Meaning, using manual mode?
First, read your manual. Then, read your manual again. There are lots of resources out there for when you're ready to start using manual mode to help you begin to learn the technical aspects of it.
Start by playing around with your settings and getting comfortable with the new camera.

Our local ritz camera offers classes on photography from beginner P&S to advanced DSLR, might be something to look into.
I might suggest a non-credit class at the local community college, but seeing as the next months are going tobe baby prepping, a 6 week class may not fit in the schedule.

Nice!!! I've got the 3100 and I love it. I basically just take a million pictures to try and learn which settings are best for certain things. I haven't done anything fancier than change the setting on the knob up on the top
